Dingwall Owners Club

Although, on a related note, you'd think I was importing human beings with all the paperwork needed for Fedex to ship a guitar from the US up to Canada.

Nice quilt on the AB!!!

I had to register with Homeland Security to get my last Dingwall across the US/Canada border to Missouri. I got an envelope from FedEx a few days after the bass arrived. TWELVE PAGES of paperwork had to be completed by FedEx and Dingwall to get it shipped! :rollno:

Delivery came today. Guess I've joined the club. Not the best photo's but what the hey. My initial impressions are that I have more of an issue getting used to playing a 5 string than I am with the fanned frets. Going to play it now.:bassist:

Congrats. I made the jump in January and the switch from 4 strings to 5 was a much bigger deal than the fanned frets.

Another thing that is (somewhat) foreign to me is the modern sound and feel of the instrument. And by "modern"....I'm referring more to feel/sound of the instrument than I am the fanned frets.

Currently I have a 85 Factor...that I bought new and a 77 J. Needless to say...they are fairly broken in. Besides this Ding, the Factor, as it turns out is the only other bass that I have had that was a new purchase. To me other Factors just don't have the same feel I of course realize that every instrument...even those made by the same vendor will have a differnt fee/sound etc....but perhaps some of it is my having broken in the instrument...and have had years to become used to it.

I'm thinking that the "modern" feel" aspect of the Ding will always be there (when compared to my older traditional basses). Just wondering if anyone else has noticed a "break in" period on their newly purchased instruments? Having only broken in one from a new purchase.....I never really noticed that transition.

Surely the strings will break in....and that said, I may see about trying other strings/guages after a bit. Wondering if DR's would work on this thing.

From what I've read of others' experiences, the Super J's can be set up to use any string set. If you're addicted to super low action, you may need to ask Sheldon for shorter 'saddle screws' if you go with a non-tapered B string. The other option is to grind them to be a bit shorter. My first five-string Super J is still wearing its original strings, so I don't have any specific recommendations.

If by breaking in a bass, you mean that it sounds better with the passing of time, I have never observed this phenomenon.

Thanks Ken. I think string hieght-wise all is good. I kind of dig in a bit...so it's set up pretty good in that regard.

With regards to breaking-in....I was thinking more of the feel.

One thing I'm realizing....and this is true for probably most 5-strings is that in comparison to 4 strings, the neck has a somewhat plank "like" feel to it. Afterall...it is larger than the other basses that I have. That is just something I'll get used to over time.

Another thing I'm noticing (and will surely overcome) is that due to the fanned frets and pickups, slapping could require one to consolidate their right hand a bit. Not a big deal....just something I'll be working in. I don't have a lot of slapping chops per se....and surely less than I did at one time (due to taking a break from the electrics). That said...the string spacing is pretty nice for a 5, in regards to slapping. I doubt that any 5's really play/feels like a 4 in that regard (especially for someone who is just starting out on a 5) but it is pretty easy hit/go back and forth between the individual strings.

Not that I have a 5....I may consider another cabinet...and/or head next time I have a G.A.S. attack.

I have a new White/Tort Combustion 5 that i'm checking out. I have it for a week to determine if I like it or not. So far i'm liking just about everything this bass has to offer, but I have lots of questions that i've asked the people at Dingwall regarding the preamp and replacement pickups but so far no one has replied. Oh well, onward and hopefully, upward.

Hey there!

I recently got a combustion 5 as well and am in my honeymoon stage with it. I can't decide if I wanna keep it or sell it and buy another Spector.

I'd ideally like to get the bass a bit more dirty (swapping out the preamp would be my first choice) and am wondering what people have thrown in these basses.

I love the sound of my Spector and love the feel of the dingwall. Could I throw my old Spector preamp in the dingwall technically?

Heads up on a great opportunity! With Sheldon's blessing, we are giving away the Link Removed. Head over to www.bassgearmag.com and check out the current giveaway.

Good luck!

Mods: I don't think that this is improper, since BGM does not get any monetary benefit out of this giveaway, but if this violates any rules, please let me know and I will remove this post.

Hey Thornton,
In case you weren't aware of it, there is additional expertise available from members of the Dingwall discussion board. I know that Carey Nordstrand would be happy to whip up some killer pickups for you. Another information source is Barry Lamb. He is usually available via telephone and is fun (and edifying!) to 'talk bass' with.

As long as the Spector preamp is for use with passive pickups, there is no technical reason to prevent this swap.

Great review Tom! One thing not mentioned, is that the EMG BT system preamp has 2 mini switches on it to extend the tone of the output which i've found interesting.

I already have my Dingwall owners card (unlucky 13), but i thought hey, its been awhile since I added any content to this owners club thread.
I've been fortunate enough to have a long-term relationship w/ Sheldon, and w/ his vision over the past 10yrs hes crafted for me the first fretless AB, and the prototype SuperJ

So to spread the word, and pique some interest

As a test mule, Sheldon assembled an ABZ...3 for me. "vintage burst" finish, Wenge neck w/ morado fingerboard

It retains all the passive goodness of an AB, but gains a 3rd pickup, and a Z2-ish SR-like vibe.
The 4 way selector allows for 1) a solo’d P tone, 2) a solo’d J bridge tone, 3) a Z2 tone (Sheldon claims its SR-like, althou it sounds squished or scooped to me), and finally 4) a bridge/neck in parallel (PJ tone). The pickup cluster provides a natural ramp, but there is still plenty of room in front for slap playing. We used the larger p'up sized shells for the ramp effect, and due to the P tone front p'up(p tones are not available in the smaller superfatty sized case. Thats said, I imagine smaller shells wouldn't give the crowded look, and provide more open space.

According to Sheldon “We wired the bridge and middle in parallel and the neck in series. This way the Stingray tone balances nicely with the neck pickup soloed and the bridge soloed balances nicely with the neck/bridge P/J tone”

The bass is very understated, super light(under 8 lbs) and has tremendous potential.

Like I said on the DW forum, imagine the possibilities if you have each pickup a series/parallel switch, put a 5 way switch in for PU selection, and maybe another switch to add the neck PU to the bridge... Tonal mega diversity.

DR nickel low riders are working on my SJ 5. Action is set very low. A heavier, think and darker tone than the stock stainless strings.

Saddle screws are a common item at any well stocked hardware, I found them at my local store for .30. If you should need to lower the saddles.

Sunbeams will also fit. You have tons of string options on the SJ models.
I've got TI flats on the four string and I might try them on the five. Slapping ink at bass strings online can really help with string lengths and info.
