This is a great point Nate! So a little background, I am also a guitar/bass instructor and I find that players will set a reference point as the G string or the E string. Myself, I reference on the E string, which made my switch to 5 string very easy, but I am just all thumbs with 6s. However, in my experience, those who have a reference of the G string find 6 string transitions easier, but struggle with 5s. I don't really have a rationale for why this is, but I have found it to be mostly true.

So that said, I find understanding your reference point may help the transistion. As said above, muting will be the big challenge.

You are probably onto something: Perhaps plucking technique factors into preferences between 4 and more?

I was originally shown the Johnny Smith method for flat picking on my dad's archtop guitars- the pinky grazes lightly on the pick guard for depth control, and the rest of the hand floats above the strings. There isn't really a rest position re: the top or bottom string.

Subsequent farting around with classical and 12-string guitar, Appalachian dulcimer, and Banjo also introduced using both hands to mute idle strings, odd string counts, single strings vs courses, etc.

I'm not smart enough to compartmentalize all those different techniques, so when I finally found my home on electric bass, the whole mess translated into floating thumb. As a result, I never had a fixed reference re: the top or bottom string- just a general sense of where all the strings are relative to my hand.

I suspect that this is why I had so little trouble adapting to the 5-string...

Tough choice. It’s no fun to have a bass that doesn’t get love. You have to decide what it means to you! But I bet there are more than a few people around here that have no intention of trying to talk you out of listing it!

I resemble this remark.... but I try really hard to justify keeping them.

As soon as I pick the “hangers” up it’s a no brainer that they should stay put

but then I put them down and let them be for a while to focus on my primary’s and then I start thinking the same.

Lol...I know man. It's a blessing and a curse. This pj has more old school thump than nearly everything I own...it's perfect. But I think my tonal tastes have changed a bit and I'm leaning to the 'ever scary - active side' as of late. It will be an instant regret I'm sure. But hey...maybe the new owner and I can work out a deal where I get first dibs back for the price I sell it for. Ughhh decisions.

unless you need to liquidate it for cash, it would provide a really nice counterpoint bass if you swung back in genre/taste from the active world. I'd suggest keeping it.

I’d say this happens often.
I’m working the opposite direction, mainly due to my current project. And that said. I still run my basses active just dialed in different

I do agree. If it suites a flavour you will come back to at some point I’d hang tight to it unless finances dictate otherwise

Solid advice above.

I started on a 4 technically but it was short lived before I moved to 5 and never went back. Now I pick up a 4 and I’m a bit lost..... the E should be a B.... but it’s not.....

I miss having the C now when I play a 5 but it’s definitely an easier transition from 5 to 6. I don’t do it much but it happens..... and the reality is, I don’t use the C as much as I feel I should since I have it except when tapping and I’m not in any project that appreciates it but some chording does come to play.

still I like having it and I miss it when I don’t.

It sure is a pretty bass. And if you are the original owner I’m guessing you waited a while to get it. So I can understand being hesitant. But it is a 4 string
