I think that the wait times are up in the air right now...the shop is up and running but I believe that they have fewer people in shop at any given time and that's a recipe for some slow-downs. I told 'em it didn't phase me (remember, I ordered and got the Rastaburst at a time when the Dingwall wait was at an all time high)...but you can't keep production schedule on a skeleton crew like you can when you have a shop full of people. In my mind, I'd rather have a healthy happy Sheldon & crew & family than get an instrument a few days earlier.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I'm not even at the point of putting my deposit down yet - needing to wait to sort out a little uncertainty with work/COVID before I do.

If you, or anyone else is experiencing workplace, housing or food insecurity right now, DON'T think about buying a bass. Putting a deposit down on an instrument or buying something only to have to sell it in a month or 5 is a bad move.

Absolute stunner! As far as the Paysons, what do you find different about them than the Dingwalls? I just picked up a Sklar Sig and it currently has DW's on it. I'm always up for finding the best string for each particular bass I've owned, (I know, expensive search :confused:) and sometimes it takes a few tries to get there. Just wondering what the Paysons could offer.

Hi all!

I recently joined the Dingwall club and couldn't be happier. I did a playthrough with my ABII of one of my bands tunes. I can't believe how good this thing sounds always! Recorded in passive mode as I'm in the middle of switching the pre to a Darkglass, and the potentiometers I bought are too wide for the body. Light compression from an MXR M87 through a Kemper-SVT profile.

It is amazing how much we spend not thinking about it like it is a normal thing to do. Yes, gas expense and grocery expense down. I knew this was going to happen early on first of Feb and stocked up on groceries but like you, we are gonna have to plan a trip to the store real soon

We are totally mandatory shut down. Wife and I are both out of work. I am keeping my store stock up for sale online only, but money is tight. Luckily we are heavy into growing our own food, nothing new, always have been. And I built a new chicken house just a few weeks ago. Fresh eggs! If you have never eaten fresh, the omega 3 fatty acid content is much higher and the yoke is a much richer color and taste so much better than store bought. I planted a bunch of radishes the other day. I started writing 2 new songs. Our area is projected to peak around 2 weeks from now, so no relief any time soon. I expect the USA to have a replay of 1918. People will get tired of being isolated, deaths will eventually go down although they doubled today. But then, mutation and second wave. I am really thinking life as we knew it is over. But opportunity knocks for us all in re-evaluation. Surprisingly, I have less time to play bass because of increased farming efforts. I was thinking, now I can finally surpass garage band level with all this new amount of time haha, but nooooo.

honestly I like both DW offerings(SS and nickel) and same for Paysons offerings. the nickels are great, love his flats on my fretless, the SS are my fav for more aggressive music and the reduced cores are kinda my second fav for everything else. I find they have a bit more grind, cut and richness of content Then most nickels but stay back from the aggression of SS strings. They are kinda like a happy medium between nickel and SS.

When I had an SJ I found that I preferred nickels on the SJ and that took a little bit of personal convincing as I preferred the SS Strings on long scales.

On longscales comparing dingwall nickels to Payson nickels is something I’ve never really done and I don’t purchase either unless I’m desperate. That’s only due to preferences and not to hold anything bad against either.

DW SS strings to Payson strings. I prefer the Payson ever so slightly more as after a couple days of break in I find absolute bliss is the sound of them.
My hands are not hard on strings and I find the Payson SS I would be itching to change them out in 2-4 months where as the Dingwalls I felt gave me more longevity at about 4-6 months while only practicing a couple times a week with a rare gig in the middle. During that time though I felt like lightning was shooting out of my hands while having the Payson on.... and I like it.

the reduced cores though are probably the best all around string for most genres. You can thump or growl and get solid longevity. I found in the bass pictured above they work best on it as it’s not a metal bass for me and it doesn’t leave the house so longevity is great.


If your looking for some reggae depth, round blues or country thump the dingwall nickels are probably best bang for buck.

Amen to this. It's just not sensible. A Dingwall (or any custom instrument I guess for that matter) is a lifelong investment, to my mind.

Thanks so much for the detail. That answered a lot of questions foe me. I do realize sometimes you need to go there to actually find out. Since the bass came with a spare set of unused DW nickels, I'll stay there for a while as I get used to the fan fret gem. As a side note, my main bass has been a wonderful Alleva that still may be the best instrument I've ever owned or played for that matter. When I purchased the Dingwall, I thought I would give it a fair go and one would stay for the long term. Truth be told, I like them equally for totally different reasons. At this latter stage in life it's a bunch to have tied up in just two basses, but as they say, you only live once.

I’m of the assumption that’s correct, but reincarnation is a possibility?!? No?!?

perhaps you won’t be able to play a Dingwalls in your next life but you could potentially be one if you came back as a tree!!! ;)

jokes aside, I had a Z3 with a same electronic set up to a sklar. Different woods mind you but I was using it in a metal situation with SS strings and it was a crusher.

With that I used to have A sound. 1 primary bass and one sound.
Now I feel like I need a few voices for my current gig. It helps justify having a few basses. ;). Tee hee hee.
I can get ALOT of sounds from my few basses but as versatile as these machines are they can’t cop every sound out there.

Good luck on your Dingwall adventure and if your feeling like you want it to talk a bit differently definitely give those reduced cores a try before throwing the towel in on it.


I hear the ACs can be amazing as well. Maybe you should keep both. Spice of life and all.
