I've seen zero frets before, but not on a Dingwall until now. I wonder if it is a prototype.

Based on many of the secondhand basses I get and need to radically re-set-up, I assume that most people enjoy really hard to play basses.

I actually find it useful for fine tuning ..if needed. As Packrat said...some basses are setup poorly...I just think it's handy to have for a minor tweak.
I remember Sheldon saying he tried to do zero frets at one point and then discontinued it because it was so fussy to do. I've never seen the adjustable nut on a DW though.
I was thinking it was so you could take it off easily and replace it with another for different string thicknesses.
Being that there looks to be some considerable downtime, in the gigging at least, I’m feeling motivated to get something done here. These frets have been dressed a few times over the years. Should I bother with these things or just replace em. Plus, these are pre banjo/mando frets which I believe are standard jumbo and I’ve been wanting to put small frets on this for a while...I’m guessing they’d be pretty small anyway by the time they got ironed out.
I'd say the adjustable nut is a convenience thing. There's been a few times a small/partial turn on an adjustable nut has solved some buzz or playability issues for me.
Granted it hasn't happened much on the Warwicks I've had, but it takes seconds to do. Super easy to adjust and fast.

Can agree here. I used to hate them, as I had the plastic Warwick ones break on me (3 times in one year) that all but made me hang up the bass till it was replaced with a brass adjustable nut. I love the fine-tuning ability of it.

My Alembic had an adjustable nut, it was pretty slick....still though I’d favor a properly cut fixed nut on a stable, set-up bass unless I was using very different strings on a regular basis.
I didn't even think of that... It seems you'd lose the benefit of the zero fret once the nut is too high.

There’s one on reverb but it’s beat to hell and am concerned about the frets and neck with all the body damage. Contacted the seller of one of here but couldn’t come to a deal.

I did that with my first J back in the day, probably not gunna try it here lol. Both the pulling part and the playing after I find quite intimidating.
I’ve convinced myself to have small frets put in, I’ll have to email the shop and see what they’re using. Even though I’ve retrofitting over the years I’ve always gone with whatever the shop is using at the time.
