I also think the P-Tone sounds better in the middle than at the neck in this bass, it used to be 3X but I got rid of the extra pickup.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I figured you fans would know better than most. I've decided my next bass will be a Dingwall. I'm borderline obsessing over them, so don't see my mind changing about that. I'm also a lefty, and reviewing their website, it looks like the Combustion/NG is my only choice. Does anyone know of other models that are available for southpaws? What about custom orders? I love the look of the D-ROC, but haven't seen a lefty anywhere.

It seems like such a small thing, but yeah! The first time someone showed me a Combustion, I'll be honest, of all things it was the battery cover that sold me... finally, a bass crafter who'd thought long and hard about how to make every little thing close to perfect for what bass players actually want. It was about the coolest instrument I'd ever seen, little did I know that was supposed to be the entry-level model. :laugh:

There's a very helpful dealer I've used on here named John (@xnewyorka ). He could definitely help you out on custom order stuff or questions.

unfortunately the only lefty options are the combustion(NG is part of it) line.

But, they are a great option!!

Pictures are useless for this purpose- so many conflicting angles, one bass closer to the lens of the camera, etc., etc., etc., especially since a fraction of an inch can make a significant difference.

The first bass I ever built, used DeArmond pickups. Just as I was about to drill screw holes to mount the pickups in my new body, a friend pointed out that the pickup placement on the Harmony they came off, was all wrong. I had no idea what he was talking about, until he demonstrated by plucking harmonics over the strings to show me the difference between the intended placement of the neck pickup on my bass vs his Gibson.

His idea of "better" was completely subjective, but it at least got me thinking. Sure enough, while sliding the pickups around to decide where to place them, I found that a 1/4 of an inch one way or the other could change the tone by a surprising amount- especially with both pickups on.

In other words, the proper way to gauge pickup placement between different basses, is by playing harmonics in the general area of the pickup coils:
  • Is the coil directly under a harmonic?
  • If not, is it closer or further from the bridge?
  • Which harmonic is closest?
Even then, it's a good idea to use some magnet paper to understand where the coils are under the cover. For example, the rectangular pickups in my 2013 ABZ are staggered splits, laid out like a reverse P.

Yeah, I'm not sad about my options, just wondering if there were more. Now I have to save my pennies, and get in what I'm assuming is a very long line to get one. Basing that assumption off of the Reverb sellers that have instruments listed that they're not supposed to receive until November.

it sounds like there is still very few in existence. If the quantities are not there I could see dingwall even doing away with the option as models evolve if there is simply no demand.
That’s said, I’d recommend talking to someone with one on order and as mentioned @xnewyorka is probably put a great place to start.

I’ve only had 5 string Supers so can only make that comparison. The supers are wider spaced so the neck feels wider but slimmer front to back. The back of the neck has a much flatter feeling profile on the supers too. They are pretty different.

The one 4-string Super that I've played (a Super P) had a neck that felt a lot like modern Fender necks in terms of overall dimensions. Obviously the feel was quite different due to the multiscale, but it was generally in that ballpark. I liked it so much that I ordered my Super J without ever having played one. Since I'm so in love with the profile of necks that match Fender's modern Jazz profiles I'm confident that the Super will be like that only better.... because... you know... Dingwall.
