It would make sense, from a production standpoint, to just make all the pickups parallel. Although, with CNC, it's probably not that big of a deal.

I would still say that Alecu would probably be better off trying to sell his current bass and trying to find an ABZ 6/3 or try to do some kind of trade deal, rather than sticking his current bass in a CNC machine and hoping for the best.

It's definitely a good looking bass, but I gotta add that there was some filter on the camera or some color correction was done in editing because Dingwall's Trans Black is less Black and more Purple, which I'm totally ok with, LOL!

It isn't going to look the same/line up due to the pivot on the current pickups. I seem to recall Sheldon advising against it in the past. Probably easier to trade up.

I think the black on that one is legit.
on the odd occasion they do actually end up black.

I made a Z2 into a Z3 by adding a neck pickup, which is probably easier since the new pickup only needed to align on one side, and the existing pickups were parallel to each other.

Still involved a lot of careful measurement; rather than “measure twice, cut once” I measured about a dozen times and took multiple shallow passes with my router (re-honing the edge and oiling the bearing between each pass) until the new cavity was the same depth as the existing pickup cavities.

So, it was possible and successful for me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’d work for your bass.

Yeah, I'd start by checking to make sure that the pickups that are already in place are indeed laid out to be able to both fit a middle pickup and/or that it's logistically feasible to do it. They may have adjusted the pickups on newer Z & AB basses so they're parallel. but both my AB and my Z have the pickups fanned to match the scale. Even if you could fit a middle one in, you may find if they are fanned that the 'extra wood' you'd have to rout or leave due to the angle difference would be really visually awkward.

I was thinking of asking Dingwall for the CNC plans, get it to a decent luthier/guitar maker that has a CNC machine and know its way around it and have them mod it but it's probably a lot of hassle - it certainly looks possible but it would require extensive work on the body.

That would be perfect but I doubt it I'll find someone that wants to trade and be somewhere close. Dingwalls are rare as it is, I think there are less than 5 in Romania.

Another option would be trading for a NG3-5/6 but I've been so spoiled by the build quality, fit, finish, balance and resonance of this bass I doubt I want to go back.

I think I'll try some different set of strings first, I've been using Elixir for some while because they last so long but I still have a set of Dingwalls lying around and definitely need to try Paysons already - maybe it will improve tone for the better.

It looks good. If it’s minty I’d say you’ve got a nicely priced instrument there. If it’s pretty road wot it could come down a few $$. Nice vintageee looking combo.

No offense, but, I would be surprised beyond extreme belief if Dingwall (or any company) would give out the entire CNC plan (G-Code). That's a huge chunk of intellectual property, plus, you have to have a CNC with the same capabilities to even use it. You're better off trying to get exact measurements from someone with a 3x.

That is slightly newer than mine, but from the same period (2008 - 2010-ish). It's my #1, although I converted mine to a PJ. It's a really great bass. The price seems fair and about the going rate from what I have seen in the past little while.

You won't regret pulling the trigger on this one. Sheldon doesn't make 'em like this anymore (thick, chambered bodies). It's a safe bet that the chambered alder sounds sweet. My ash/maple/pau ferro SJ-5 is the most amazing fiver that I've ever fingered, hands down.

I feel like used pricing is starting to go up depending on what you have, though used square pickup'd Afterburners still seem low/undervalued compared to the newer ones. My opinion is that it is a touch high, but seeing it in person will give you better scale. For not much more you can get this one (not mine) which seems a bit newer and a nice top:

It does make me feel like my Super PJ is appreciating in value.

nice looking bass. Very decent price too.
I may be rehoming a couple of mine in the near future, but probably not quite as inexpensively as that one.
