Does anyone know where it would be possible to get a payton 5 string bridge or a similar replacement to suit a V1 Combustion? I installed a GK3B pickup and the bridge isn't forgiving with the pickup placement...I think with the payton I will be able to get more even and closer placement.

Maybe even try Dingwall?

Sheldon won't sell a bridge (I've asked) and Payson doesn't make them anymore to my knowledge. I see used Payson bridges pop up every so often.

I could swear someone on Facebook claimed they got a Dingwall-compatible bridge from Hipshot. They said something to the effect of Hipshot needed special permission from Dingwall to sell directly to a customer.

I have no idea if that’s a legitimate option or ever was, but there was a picture of what looked like an NG with an AB bridge to back it up.

Perhaps with the new designed bridges we saw last NAMM for the D roc’s, maybe they will be available for retro fit. They looked similar to the AB bridge.

D-Bird ergonomics are state of the art - IMO. Every other bass (including the NG-2's and the Afterburner 4 I used to own) feels lacking to me when put against the D-Bird. The long scale is effortless when held at the more upright angle. Absolute perfection, for me.

The D-Roc ergonomics are just as good, and maybe even better.

I prefer the looks of D-birds, probably because I cut my teeth on a '76 Tbird (1985-1998). They seem to be going for more $ than the D-rocs, is that a scarcity issue, and is it likely to continue?

I’m with you on the D Bird looks. The D Roc seems to work better in some colors than others. IMHO.
I’m thinking the D Roc is probably a bit better playing farther up the neck.

I agree 100% D-Rocs seem to look better in darker colours IMO because it makes the back end cut a little less noticeable

There’s no money way up there.

I’m really liking the Dbird.

I’d still like the last few frets to slap against. But it’s not really a slappy kinda bass.

I suppose I could install a sort of ramp with a metal top to slap closer to the pickups, but its not that big a deal.

Funny, because I was almost thinking about posting my white D Bird for sale earlier this year, but then three other TB people posted their white D Birds for sale, all in a row
It's not that I don't like or want my Bird. I was just really tempted to try an F Bass BN5, and I have no more storage room for more basses, considering my hobby-level playing. The Bird seemed like the easiest way to finance that flip. I'm glad I didn't. I hustled to get this one, and I like the story that goes along with the purchase, which involved two outstanding TB members.

There are currently 2 D-Bird Standards for sale on Reverb today. My current “want” is an aquamarine D-Roc. Anyone care to change my mind...pros/cons for each. I’m not so much a collector so the rarity of the D birds is not a factor.

Ive got this one in the avi and a blackburst...when I heard about all the poopie going down I couldn't help myself.

I'm still pissed at myself for not snapping up the NAMM white Dbird 5 string.....it was $5500 US on reverb though and after import fees would have been a raping.

I've seen 6 5 String DBird customs in total...the two NAMM ones, two red gold ones and a blue one in Japan (just missed out on this one too!! argrgghhg) and someone on this board has a blue/green looking one.

Aquamarine is a real eye catcher! I didn't really take much notice of the upper access to compare but I'd say go with which one catches your eye the most.

Yes and yes.

There will be no more of them, and with anything like that, which is a limited run (100 or so) and no chance of more being made (for legal reasons), there's a good bet that the pricing will remain where it is or more.

I've had basses and played basses and bought/sold a few of the years...and I've never lost a dollar on a bass, usually making money when I sell. The D-Bird is one that I'd stake a claim on only being more desirable with time.

I'd suggest they're either appropriately priced or undervalued right now.

That one with the custom pickguard is priced nicely but that screwed in guard hurts me a little.

I don’t know. If you’re a no-money-zone player, going above the 12th fret really gets tricky on the D Bird. My Spector Euro 5 is much more convenient in that regard. I haven’t tried the D Roc so I’m not sure how much better it is.

Yes, while I like that pick guard I don’t look at it and think “I gotta have that”.
