Question by the way, was a reverse contrast dingwall ever made ?

As in, wenge neck and maple fingerboard ?
Or blacked out maple neck/heel/head and normal light maple fingerboard maybe ?
I suppose that would go well only combined with a dark body though.

Just for reference for anyone that may be interested in tuning a 4-string to Drop A tuning (AEAD) like I do...I just installed a set of D'Addario Pro Steels on my NG-3 that work really well. They gauges/lengths are as follows:

.145T - Super Long Scale
.105 - Long Scale
.085 - Long Scale
.070 - Long Scale

After some nut filing and a slight truss rod tweak, these play great and have the tension I was looking for. Reasonable cost too - around $24usd. Got 'em from Fret Nation.

Easy mod with the Super Fatties is switching the pickups to series. Doing this to the neck pup moves you closer to the P tone sound. With the bridge, you get a fatter sound. It’s a simple rewire of the pickup, or you could get fancy and add switches.

If you had to go under the pickguard tochange batteries you probably noticed the routing. Most likely, you could put a P style split Pup in there, but you would need a new pickguard.

It’s a pretty easy swap.

Really? I LOVE it - in fact (call me strange) but the Voodoo body with the violin style top edge - not sure what this was called sorry - was one of my FAV shapes. Who am i kiddin - i love them ALL.

Throwing this question out there- how difficult would it be to add a third/middle pickup to an existing instrument? My 'new to me' ABI 5 has two, which I'm supremely happy with at this point, but just curious. And could I send it to @Sheldon D. and Co. to have the work done??

The shop has been focused on getting basses out and hasn't (to my knowledge anyway) done any mods for anyone (or the average joe anyway) for some time. You'd have to re-route it and if I recall, due to the pickup angles needed, it isn't going to be clean/perfect, so I think it has been recommended against. Others will speak up, I'm sure, but this is what I recall.

I'm with you. I like the body well enough, but I like AB2s better, especially the neck.

I think this is your bass? as @NaH says your pickups aren't parallel to each other so you could have it routed but you will have oddball spacing which wont look great and probably significantly hurt its value.
No chance of having the shop do any work on it while there is an 18 month wait on new bases sadly.

Thanks for letting me know! I kind of assumed thus, but I just wanted to double-check. I again LOVE how it is already, just was curious how a triple-stack would sound. Next time!
and yes, that's my new baby! I LOVE the wenge- my ex MTD 535 had a neck same construction, truly nothing else like it in all of bassdom.

These are mine:
The ABZ is all passive and has a P-tone in the neck, I pretty much never move from the P-tone only setting so I would have been just as happy with a standard


The Combustion got a few mods and now looks like this:

P-tone in the middle position.
I 'upgraded' the standard Combustion to 3x as all the cool kids were doing it and I already had the ABZ.
Then I got my hands on a D-Bird with the middle only pickup setting. I pretty much immediately 'downgraded' the Combsution to 2x and threw the P-tone in the middle and this one is now my faviourite.
If I could have a 1 pickup long scale Dingwall I would be quite happy.

For a Combustion or NG, seems like all you’d need would be a custom-shaped pick guard to cover the bridge pickup hole.

I have thought about it but I don't want to be fabricating a larger custom pickguard, the Combsution is what it is. If Dingwall made a D-roc 5/Cumbustion with no pickguard and a single central pickup or a split P I'd be all over it.
What I'm saying is I want a long scale Pbass haha

I wholeheartedly agree that the middle pickup sound on these is nothing short of amazing. It does the P bass thing pretty well but more well rounded.

Doesn’t seem like it would be too hard to just put a split P pickup in the middle of an AB body...
