Dingwall Owners Club

I have never played a bad mesa amp, but the d800+ is not comparable to a bass400 or a carbine m9, if you know what I mean.
I haven't tested all their amps (they're not super common either around here) but some were clearly better than others, imho.

I agree. There is a few in the line that just don’t work for me but others love. IMO The subway line has been solid from day one and is only getting better

That’s Sriracha!!!!

To loop back a bit on amp/cabs. I'm actually really, really happy for more reasons as well. I got locked into "that" Dingwall + Darkglass tone that... well, probably 75%+ of metal Dingwall players (and a lot of non-Dingwall players) have now. I felt it very tried and worn out at this point. I was going to go spelunking through some of my older Fractal modeling presets and do a lot of tweaking this month, but, I think the M/B has essentially solved that for me. That head with the Damnation Audio MDB-1 that I picked up from @silky smoove is a pretty great combination. The B7K is still a fine pedal, and I am not trying to down-talk what people do or sound like with their gear here -- just for me, I didn't feel like staying on that bandwaggon.

I never owned or wanted to own a B#K. I bought and sold and then traded again for an X7 though. Sometimes, it's the right tone. But not always. And it's getting so tired in the "scene". Everyone's just chasing that Nolly sound, and it's so boring. I love my X7 but I'm not going to leave it on for the whole album or set. I'm happily using a Darkglass AO900 head because it's versatile and the drive options aren't really like the B#K sound at all.

I miss that pedal. The MBD2 I bought to replace it, despite the claims, does not sound the same as the MBD1, or at least I don’t think it does. Alas, I don’t have room for the 1 on my smaller board, so the 2 will have to do.
I really like running my MBD1 into a shift line buzz. I know it’s weird to run two distortion pedals stacked like that but the combo just works. The MBD1 thickens everything up and the shift line buzz brightens it.

I went a similar path. Was using my Dingwall Ng2 and b7k ultra as the core of my sound for a little while. But yeah I also got tired of that sound. Used the A/O for a little while and it was great with my old band. But now with the new band I use a microtubes x paired with a Mesa d-800. I use the x for a more aggressive sound but I use it less frequently. For clean guitar rock verses for example it’s normally off. I mostly just use it to help cut through for the more metal like riffs. For big sounding choruses I’ve started using my bass octave deluxe more to add a deep sub octave instead of just adding dirt all the time. And for more ambient parts like intros and bridges of certain songs I use my delay with that Janek Gwizdala type sound which definitely breaks away from the Nolly type sound.

I own a AO 900 & b7k but I don't know why the source audio aftershock doesn't get more attention....that is one badass pedal
Great pedal and they are a top notch company making killer stuff. I think the deep diving computer based stuff scares a lot of guys. On guitar forums their tech team and management bend over backwards to make what people want and while a lot of techy guitar types like the computer tweaking I don't think it's nearly as popular on the bass side.

I have a Collider reverb and delay pedal by them that is incredibly good. I've only used it on guitar but should try it with bass for fun (I don't use those effects live for bass).

I like the modeling stuff because it has reduced my impulsive pedal shopping. The catch and release program has slowed drastically.

I've had a number of Darkglass pedals come and go. They were all really cool and fun to explore, plus they held their value. But after a while, I'd put them back up for sale.

I did pick up a Omni Cab Sim, and that's been a fun exploration. Plus it has solid headphone sound and an aux in, so it's a pretty compact practice rig.

ymmv!

I’ve got an X ultra and I’ve found that it is easy to go overboard with the drive, because you have SO much gain available and still retain your low end. It’s easy to fall into “djent territory”. Finding the right amount to blend with the guitars depending on the song can yield you some pretty awesome solid rock tones, though

John(@xnewyorka ) got me turned onto the OCS. I’ve actually set it to DI straight to interface for now and splits t the 800+ keeping the rest of the board out of the recording chain.... I don’t have an F’in clue what the heck I’m doing with the computer yet but that’s been my starting point.

for the darkglass stuff, I cannot state enough that the microtubes X is awesome. Simple, and effective at keeping a clean but boosted signal with the cut of broken glass implied. I don’t know if the X7 can “come down” to its level as I have not tried it but I’d sure hope so.

I just got a DG B7K V2 - but most of the gain is set low - was never a DG fan - too glassy/tinny....Amptweaker is more my flavour - bassdrive jr - has it all. IMO

The After Shock has a lot to offer, but the big benefit (its deep interface) is also its weakness. I found that working on sounds 'on my own' was really the first part of a longer equation, where you'd really need to also have that full interface to tweak it into shape for a band setting as well. IAfter having and using a C4 as well, I found the fact that you needed to use the hub to slot/store, etc. the patches rather than having them on the actual pedal was a bit of a pain too. As someone who's not in the deep end of 'harder music' I also had a hard time translating what I was looking to hear for a few songs into 'how to get there' with that interface with multiple engines and hundreds of distortion types.

For me the ability to save the presets (especially for recording) is brilliant ....I wish more pedals could do this

I loved the clean boost and eq of the Alpha Omega Ultra. A very cool pedal, with tons of flavors. Especially if you like dirt. But off it went.

I go through cycles of acquiring and purging. Once a year or so, I look around and ask what I’m really using. Then I start listing gear.

This spring, I’ve emptied my van of any gear I’m not using. (I’ve got a kiteboarding habit, not uncommon here in the Columbia River Gorge). I raised a couple grand, and the van is totally decluttered. I feel much better. But now I’m eyeing foil wings...

I’ll probably part with a fEarful 12/6 this weekend, maybe the pair, and that could start the ball rolling in the music room. With gigs a thing of the past, and the future looking bleak, cash is king. The basses are safe, but what do I need amps for? Plus, building fEarfuls is half the fun. I can always whip up another.

Five years ago I staged a massive purge, down to one bass and one rig. It was totally liberating. Amps, cabs, racks, fx, basses....once I got going, everything was for sale.

Somehow I’m back up to four basses. All lightweight four strings with 19mm string spacing. It’s a tight little pack.

I guess we’re all running some kind of catch and release program.

I went through a cleansing phase too. Then I read the last few posts and now I've got a Source Audio Aftershock on the way...

What I am learning, though, is how valuable versatility is. Like with pedals, all the weird options in the world are great, but if there's only one footswitch, it will only ever do one thing. I have a Kemper and a remote and I can do literally any sound I want from one footswitch. Unfortunately the drive pedals are a weak point of the unit...hence the aftershock.
