With a P/J setup, what's your preferred bridge pickup?
P-tone
FDV
FD3

I put a FDV in mine and am not sure I like it. It sounds good on the B and E-strings, a little tinny on the others. I am used to an older model SJ P/J 5 that has the original Super Fatty in the bridge, however it is in the 70's position and the P pickup is about 1/4" closer to the neck. Overall it has a very even tone across the strings. I don't know if it's due to the pickup placement or type (or both).

I don't solo the bridge pickup ever. It's either both pickups on or solo neck.

How can I tell what pickups are in my ABI? Must I remove them from the body or what's the easiest way?

You could contact the shop and see if they have a record based upon the S/N. Other than that, you'd have to pull the pickups. What year is it?

I was thinking of making the bridge pup an FDV and the other a P-tone.

I have never seen an Afterburner with two pickups in that position, just the standard two or three. I wonder if they would even do that on that model. I'd love to see it!

I don't think I've ever seen an AB build with the pickups like that. Makes me wonder if that is an option. About the closest I've come is I have a 3x build with P-tone, FDV, FDV and I like that well enough. There was someone on here that put the P-tone in the middle.

Me either, but when it comes to stuff you never know what will catch the fancy of the shop, worth asking the question. The next best thing would be to get the 3x and just put in a regular 2-pickup 4-way switch...if you don't mind losing the real estate on whatever your top-wood is.

This is close to how I have my combustion, P-Tone in the middle but with a FD3 in the bridge. The downside of the P-tone is that you have no parallel option (I mean you can do it but don't, it's terrible) so it's always the hotter pickup unless you wire the bridge series or mess with the pickup heights.

I see some people here have a P-tone in the bridge, I wonder what their switching options are, @Lowendtech ?

I'll go out on a limb and say the shop will shoot down an AB with that configuration and if you want a Canadian bass with that setup you'll need to go Z2. Otherwise, go 3X on an AB, which would be the more cost-effective route.

I assume you've tried the Payson reduced cores. They have even more tension than the ss I assume.

The weird thing is I couldn't play them on my NG3 due to the high tension but I put them on my Z3 and lowered the action and have been loving them on it for the last couple days.

I really like the RCs. In all honesty, I haven’t had one bass set up very consistently for a little while now. I’ve been exploring quite a bit of strings and Whoch bass they’ve been on. I assume I’ll come back to roosting the RCs on my Maple Z3 6 and Payson stainless on Green/purple(Galactus). No issues with tension either way. If I find myself back in a metal project(hoping) I really hope it will be a standard tuned project and no special gauges required.
I guess it’s not too surprising that you didn’t bond with the strings the same way on different necks. Those are 2 VERY different necks your talking about.

I resolved to a P tone(neck) with the factory FD3 on a Z2 (MM style config) as I did prefer the P tone over the FD3. I’d even be inclined to double that to a double P tone. Beef it up somewhat.

I agree that the switchable parallel option on the P tone isn’t even worth having unless it’s already switched on an existing build.

Well payson recently announced a set for standard A at some point in the near future if I'm not mistaken.
I'll jump on it as soon as it's out .. need to check the gauges first but apart from that, yes

Yep, they are introducing a lot of new gauges for downtuning, have a custom gauge set incoming based on these. Was just talking to him about it.

I think if it isn’t labeled it is FD3, but worth checking as the initial FDVs weren’t labeled either. Mine are all labeled.
