P-Tone for me. The first time I’ve been able to solo the bridge pup and like it.
For ref: previous tries are original SF and the newer FDV.
I liked the FDV, didn’t much like the SF (but that may be due to the “right next to the bridge” position as it was an early model).

I had the super fattie wired in series, and with a volume boost, it would do all that burpy jazz bass stuff. Not my go to sound or setting, but fun to have. You just needed more volume.

I liked the P and the bridge together in parallel best. That produced a tight, focused slap tone, and played well the the hybrid tone control in passive mode.

What surprised me was how jazzy the bridge pup on the Dbird can be.
I’m not sure what that one is, or how it’s wired. The Dbird sounds so good, I haven’t had any urge to tinker other than strings. DR Pure blues .040. Might try the Payson flats on there one of these days. When it’s not windy.

My original spec for my forthcoming Super P was a FD-3, just out of default since that's what I'm used to. I sort of second guessed and talked to the guys at the shop and asked what current shop-wisdom was on the best fit and they said that many people have been going with the P-Tone (though also the other options have been used as well) but they thought that the output/tone would balance well. I did request a bit of customization on the wiring though and have a series/parallel on the P-Tone.

Interesting! Do you have soundclips of the bass with both P-tones?

I have a Payson set on the way.
Usually I would say Kalium but they are seemingly impossible to get a hold of or have orders fulfilled nowadays, from my recent experience, so giving a Texas company in Payson some business. Will post up my review when I get them installed and set up. Having a custom set put together for my tuning. They are about to release some new gauges too!

Stainless for me too. I wanted a .135 low B, but the next highest is a .145 which was too much, and with only 1 step down on my A, I think this will be fine.

ah. Was curious on composition. Stainless. I really like the Payson stainless. Matter of fact it’s time to put some new Payson stainless on Galactus

I used to play drop A standard with standard Dingwall stainless strings and never had much issue but I appreciate the increased tension provided from the thicker gauges. I just don’t like playing those fat strings.

I hear you- I know you can definitely go with a lighter gauge set even downtuning on these, but this set looks to be a good compromise, I'll find out soon! I have a set of Dingwall SS set extra, just in case.

I only have experience with the FD3 in my SPJ5 and a SF in an earlier SJ(P)4.

I prefer the FD3 to the SF that was in the converted SJ. It’s got a thicker sound. Although honestly I rarely engage it. The neck pickup solo is normally where it’s at for the music I’ve been playing recently (using TI jazz flats). It’s a nice flavor of the oxymoron modern-vintage.

Having said that, I’d love to hear what the Ptone or FDV would offer.

I assume you've tried the Payson reduced cores. They have even more tension than the ss I assume.

The weird thing is I couldn't play them on my NG3 due to the high tension but I put them on my Z3 and lowered the action and have been loving them on it for the last couple days.
