Dingwall Owners Club

I’d just like to rave about the customer service at John Fox Bass again. As soon as I got notification that my D Roc was at the FedEx store to pick up, I went and got it. Half an hour later, an email from him, asking to make sure everything was in good shape, and apologizing for FedEx’ shipping times. That’s going the distance to make sure your customer is satisfied. I have utmost faith that when my reserved NG-3 comes in this May, I will once again get stellar service.

John's a great dude. I haven't bought from him but have had some occasion in Dingwall land to spend some time with him. He went out of his way to come and see me a couple years ago playing in Binghamton NY with his family and then last year he came out when we were playing in New Jersey. He's just as chill and solid in person as by phone or email. He's a good part of the greater professional Dingwall family.

If you happen to have any recordings of the Fretless dingwall I'd love to check those out! Can't say I've ever heard a fretless Dingwall before.

I have this recording of my fretless Combustion from 'phase one' of its modifications Its got the NG2/Z2 configuration & the DGTC for a preamp. I'm not going heavy on the fretless 'moves' but you can tell it's not a fretted bass (some places more than others)

It's a unique and cool bass. Do you find the piezo pickups useful for achieving your tones?

I was trying to get closer to the unamplified tone of the instrument, not only with the piezo but also with the move of the pickups and the preamp change. I don't know that I accomplished that more than very partially, but the piezo definitely brings something to the table. In doing some pre-production the comment was that it sounds more 'three dimensional' now.

@johnsonabq have you looked at these? I've been thinking about this on my Combustion

Michalík Designs
That's the "tone pump" preamp that goes in Spector's Euro series basses. Lots of people like them, just remember to set the output adjustment on the pre to match your equipment, and/or playing style. I personally prefer the DGTC, but that's me. I don't know the sound you have in your ear. ;) BTW, you'll lose your three band EQ.

I just realized that playing my new D Roc through amp or DG Element is going to be odd, in a strange way. I haven’t played a passive bass in a long time. When I got back into playing recently, I decided to strip my J Bass (my very first bass) down to fix a few things, and am still putting my Warmoth build together, so I’ve been on just actives. Kind of looking forward to it, and the simplicity.

Also, I’ve decided I like the name D-Roc more than D-Bird. The Roc is a titanic bird in middle eastern mythology, just as the Thunderbird is a titanic bird in Native American mythology.

Triple pickup Dingwall basses brought me back to preferring passive basses. Their output is high, and the pickup options give me all the shaping I want!

I’m warming up to the D-Roc shape. There’s something oddly classic about the shape, with the horn. I don’t know how to describe it. I’m thinking the body shape is a lot less “extreme” than I originally thought.

Even having heard that it was light and well balanced, I was NOT prepared for how it sits and feels when strapped on.I can’t wait to lightly tweak the setup tomorrow and plug it in (probably mostly due to altitude, it seems to need a hair more relief).

Oh awesome! Thanks for posting this. Sounds real nice! much smoother than I was expecting. Definitely had a nice fretless vibe.

Was that a bass you had defretted? I don't imagine there's a regular fretless option with combustion basses?

WOAH!!! Bill, is this a new Root Shock album?

I just checked out a quick snippet but I’m gonna try and listen to it all tomorrow. I’m stoked to hear the rest
