perhaps it’s a prototype? It doesn’t have any of the “shaping” of a Canadian model. ie the recessed cut where it says super

It could also just be a very special order for an VIP endorser/customer. Stranger things have happened.

I always wondered what a truly balanced tension set (or close to it) would be like. I'll find out. Also, I opted for the smaller wrap, in case they're a good fit on the fretless.

Indeed! But it is definitely an unusual super headstock.

The Super has neither an inlaid D nor the usual routed 'mouth'/flame detail. But they all appear to be Canadian necks in the midst of the finishing process.

Sorry, I mixed the subject...I thought it was about the D-Roc in the front of the picture. Because I am too nervous waiting for my D-Roc Standard-5 to be produced and shipped LOL

Experiment time... I've ordered 2 customs sets from Newtone. They are:

- Style: Platinum
- Wrapping material: Nickel Plated Steel
- String length form ball end to nut: 37.5
- Core type: Round
- Taper at bridge: 3rd, 4th, 5th
- 1st: .044 wound
- 2nd: .056 wound
- 3rd: .076 wound *
- 4th: .102 wound *
- 5th: .130 wound *


And:

- Style: Platinum
- Wrapping material: Nickel Plated Steel
- String length form ball end to nut: 37.5
- Core type: Hexagonal
- Taper at bridge: 3rd, 4th, 5th
- 1st: .042 wound
- 2nd: .056 wound
- 3rd: .074 wound *
- 4th: .098 wound *
- 5th: .130 wound *


The first set is as close as possible to literally even tension across the neck at give or take 42-44lbs (slightly more on the E). The second set is similar, but with hex-core and factored down slightly for the stiffer feel. We'll see how they do

I used this one, and fudged the gauges up or down based on what the calculator had for numbers vs. what Newtone had for numbers to be as close as I could.

Wow, that's pretty crazy that the A string is the odd one out. Usually on a 34 inch scale it's the D string that is a good 10 pounds more than the rest.

Thanks for posting because I was going to just get the same gauges as the medium light Payson set but I'll try it as close as possible now.

I still see the D string being the highest tension, so check what you're plugging in.

Also these are going on a Super for you? because I just measured 39 inches from nut to ball end on my Combustion, I'm not sure if that really matters but yeah.

Also if anyone could help me with a strings question, I love the Payson Medium Light Nickel Rounds but he doesn't offer a .110 tapered string currently. I've used Daddarrio in the past but I've heard they are inconsistent winding length?

I'm looking for a string to be close to balanced for drop D. I know I can just tune down a .100 or .105 and it will be good enough, I've been doing that with a .100 but the tuning issues are slightly annoying for recording. Also I just prefer the tone of a mostly balanced set.

I've used kalium in the past and really really liked them but since their reputation is in the toliet plus no social media presence from them in about a year I'm scared to buy from them. Any help is appreciated.

You might be pleasantly surprised w/our SS 4string set, the E, A and D are Tapered. If you keep a brand new set tuned down it’ll have more pleasing tension, not too flabby, than if you tune down a really worn in set.

No, I mis-entered it on my order...I've already emailed them to ask to change the measurement for both sets.

Didn't want to shy too far away from the medium light gauging because of fear that I won't like them, those strings already feel quite light to me. I asked them that if they have any resources regarding balanced tension for their stuff specifically to kindly share with us.

Hopefully I like these so I'll have more options for custom gauging moving forward.

Yeah, for me it's an experiment. We'll see. I've always ended up back where I started, but I keep trying, particularly with the Fretless.

So I did two things...

One, I got me a Dingwall NG3!

Two, I gutted it and installed the John East MM SR 3 band. Passive tone control addon coming later this week. Will probably wire up a battery kill switch or something as well.

I also have a rotary switch upgrade coming as well

I like the dark glass preamp and have used it in other projects, but for my Dingwall I wanted something a bit more neutral and flexible. I had the idea to try out the MMSR since I had it in my Ray24 from the Stingray Mod Guide series, and success!
