I really am surprised at myself for forgetting that the SP is routed for the reverse configuration. I ordered mine with a plain white guard in standard w/b/w because I was planning a custom guard. I wanted to see if I liked the reverse configuration beforehand and made a temporary control plate so I could check it out. I preferred the standard configuration...

thanks. I'm just trying to figure it out with a P/J and the best configuration on the P when combining with the J. Just hard to wrap my head around the concept not being optimal on a Dingwall P/J to get the modern P/J sound. I don't play traditional P music (if there is a thing), but something "like" a spector euro P/J, but with all the dingwall goodness. That being said, if standard P with J is the best factoring in all the dingwall specs, then so be it

I have an FDV bridge pup headed my way to compare with the FD3. So I could probably do that at some point in the near future.

However, when I inquired whether the DW shop could sell me a white pearloid guard, they said they would need a good picture of my bass with a reference scale in order to answer the question. This discussion reminds me that I dropped the ball as life for busy.

Apparently subtle revisions to the SPJ5 design mean there’s no guarantee a guard would line up properly.

I’ve considered mailing my guard off to pickguardian or someone similar to get a quality replacement. I’d offer to sell my tort guard if that happens.

-Edit- just realized you said SP5. The SPJ5 pickguard has a small notch to accommodate the bridge pickup.

Hey guys - pickup switch thoughts. I have a Z3 with the 6 way switch from Mo and I've wanted to switch the FDVs out for FD3s before. I've always done my own work but don't want to get into Mo's switch and work.

Would the easiest and least invasive way to switch be cut the leads away a little ways off the switch and splice in the new ones? I guess that way I wouldn't touch the switch and could always reverse it. Any other thoughts?

What about the music, guys? Can you share what you're actually playing with your Dingwall basses? Asking cause all this talk about the coil positioning inside the pickup housing...does it really matter regarding the songs you play?

there’s be a lot of discussion in recent past around pick up pairing for PJs. Most of it revolving around @BurningSkies recent build. The P tone being a class fav and the one he chose.

I’ve kinda really wanted a double P and that’s getting pretty close.

that said I’ve I was going PJ I’d lean toward making the Bridge an SF2. I think that would be the pup to really smooth out the J in contrast to just running the P solo.

the older PJ configurations came with a SF in the bridge and I really enjoy the enoeriencenive had with that.

on the topic of P vs reverse P, if the man Sheldon says it smooths the P out and detracts from what the P is actually all about I’m taking his word on that. Will I experiment now?..... maaaaaaybe.. curiosity and all but I think I know what results to expect now before going into it.

in reference of my causing the rabbit hole, I play music in the styles of Alice in Chains, Bad Wolves, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Ghost, heavy pop covers, original music along those lines.

other thoughts. Leave the FDVs. They seem so appropriate for that beast in comparison to the other offerings.

I mean, try it without the pickguard at all to start? It won't look the best, but, there's no reason to jump to the final solution that you're uncertain about . When I was playing with two pickup Combustions and moving things around, I just left the pickguard off for a couple weeks.

I played the fretless for about 6 weeks while the pickguards were being fabricated for me. Yeah, looked kind of dodgy, but I wasn't gigging it at the time.

Thanks for your reply. Curious cause I've ordered my first Dingwall shortly but im not playing any sort of prog metal kinda style which is more frequently seen as Dingwall demoes on Youtube etc. Seriously, any other Dingwall demo vid is recorded in-house as a cover to some original tracks or as a bass line for some playback. Why? I just wanted to see more videos from gigs in live setting with some original staff.

Haha! Actually my spotify playlist might surprise you, but this is the music I enjoy playing and writing based on.

I LOVE the FDVs - they are awesome. They are definitely more open and neutral (and as a result flexible) to my ears than the FD3s I had in my NG3. I can easily emulate a p-bass, j-bass, stingray, etc with my setup. But, I miss some of that punch, extra compression and low mids that to me is the signature sound of a Dingwall.

That being said I now intimately know the sounds in this bass and can judge the change for better or worse. And I've already bought the FD3s from John I just want to make sure to try it I do it the least invasive way.

Until I went to Dingwall, I played Spector and Warwick. Both great in these settings, but something about Dingwall made me switch, happy I did.
