Until I went to Dingwall, I played Spector and Warwick. Both great in these settings, but something about Dingwall made me switch, happy I did.

I totally understand that. I debated on going with a 5'er as well, but in the music stated above, I found I rarely, most likely never, used the highest string. So I went with a 4 string tuned BEAD, heavier strings and had the full setup done before I got it. I still had to tweak the neck and bridge settings, but it's great. I've had the NG3 in 5 string, as well as Euros in 5 string. Just realized I was paying for a wasted string, so went to downtuned 4 stringers.

I LOVE the FDVs - they are awesome. They are definitely more open and neutral (and as a result flexible) to my ears than the FD3s I had in my NG3. I can easily emulate a p-bass, j-bass, stingray, etc with my setup. But, I miss some of that punch, extra compression and low mids that to me is the signature sound of a Dingwall.

That being said I now intimately know the sounds in this bass and can judge the change for better or worse. And I've already bought the FD3s from John I just want to make sure to try it I do it the least invasive way.

I take it they are soldered to the 6way and don’t have screw terminals.

Hail! should I include pantera, black label society, rammstein, AC/DC, The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Five Finger Death Punch, Trivium, Volbeat to round it out as influencers? Haha! Actually my spotify playlist might surprise you, but this is the music I enjoy playing and writing based on.

I love Ghost. Really well written songs that are so excellently genre referential but 4th wall breaking tongue-in-cheek. Also their live show is really excellent. Last time they came through town we were VIP down in front, which really is the best way to see them. Their players' ability to hit all their marks, deal with the tech of the show and also play is really fun to watch.

I have a few Pantera albums (and stuff like Sepultura), and come to Rammstein through the industrial scene (played in an industrial band for a handful of years in the 90's). Though for heavier stuff I'd opt for black metal. I like the pose and theatrics of it.

Lol I love Ghost but it always cracks me up when all these "satanic" bands sing about the end of the world then freak out on stage about who the President is LOL ...doesn't help their image too much

Don't tempt me...I actually thought about it. But after getting a Z it's the only way forward now and it'll be a while before I can justify #2! And yes - direct soldered. Normally I'd just undertake it's just delicate enough I don't want to screw it up with my fat clumsy fingers.

Can do. No bridge pup though

I have an FDV bridge pup headed my way to compare with the FD3. So I could probably do that at some point in the near future.

However, when I inquired whether the DW shop could sell me a white pearloid guard, they said they would need a good picture of my bass with a reference scale in order to answer the question. This discussion reminds me that I dropped the ball as life for busy.

Apparently subtle revisions to the SPJ5 design mean there’s no guarantee a guard would line up properly.

I’ve considered mailing my guard off to pickguardian or someone similar to get a quality replacement. I’d offer to sell my tort guard if that happens.

-Edit- just realized you said SP5. The SPJ5 pickguard has a small notch to accommodate the bridge pickup.

That’s ok, as long as I have the neck pocket for reference of the pickup location, I can use my current pickguard for the rest. My SP5 is an SPJ5, too, sometimes I just don’t type the J there.

I got my parchment guard from Terrapin Guitars and they did a great job. The bass originally wore a tort pickguard but it just didn’t work with Capri Orange.

A kind TB member has offered to send me their old pickguard, so hold off on disassembling your basses though!

What about the music, guys? Can you share what you're actually playing with your Dingwall basses? Asking cause all this talk about the coil positioning inside the pickup housing...does it really matter regarding the songs you play?

I am playing covers that range from classic rock, disco, current pop, R&B, funk, 80's - a real wide range of stuff, although the heaviest stuff I do is Ozzy and Judas Priest (one song each - not really that heavy). I get it all done on my Super J5 (P/J). I would say I use the P/J configuration about 80% of the time and P soloed for the rest.

I would have no problems using my Afterburners or Combustion for all that material as well.

I have to think that anyone who actually believes that Ghost are satanic in any form and fashion probably didn't read the brief. He's a guy who tours with his mom, and who has the schmaltzy stage banter down to an art.

The reach to the nut on my 35" scale Cirrus is longer than the reach on my 36.25" Afterburner four string. Balance is better, and the AB is a whole pound lighter. The Dbird is the same weight as the Cirrus, but balances better and feels even shorter.

My Super P feels very compact.

the reach on my 37” dingwall is actually 1” close then my 35” Spector. Just a rough measurement from shoulder to nut the way I wear em neck up at a 45’ish.

A feature that makes 'the reach' even easier is the rear mounted (recessed) strap lock. It's standard on Canadian models and easily implemented on Chinese models...

Imo the reach is much more noticeable sitting than standing. It's definitely noticeable it's a longer reach than a standard 34" scale bass seated but on a strap it doesn't seem that significant.

That recessed strap pin on the back of the Dbird is probably why it feels shorter than the AB without that feature. Good point!

Thanks for your reply. Curious cause I've ordered my first Dingwall shortly but im not playing any sort of prog metal kinda style which is more frequently seen as Dingwall demoes on Youtube etc. Seriously, any other Dingwall demo vid is recorded in-house as a cover to some original tracks or as a bass line for some playback. Why? I just wanted to see more videos from gigs in live setting with some original staff.

I'll be playing a live streamed (no audience) gig this saturday, 9PM Switzerland time. Original rock tunes.

Expect my trusted Super P 5 through an Ashdown tube head. Not sure if we're bringing our own cabs yet - DI likely anyway.
