It's one wire running under all the pieces, you can see it on close up pics.

I'm recording some tracks for my band and in the quiet sections I'm getting some noise from my bass. Not a ton, but it's noticeable and makes my tracks unusable. I did some troubleshooting to confirm that the noise is coming from my bass and nothing else in the chain. I think this is a relatively new issue since I haven't noticed it before and no one else has mentioned it.

Any ideas what to look for? I opened up the control cavity and took a look and nothing stood out.

Some more background info:
I bought the bass new about 15 months ago.
It has the original batteries. Changing them is on my list of things to do.
I'm soloing the bridge pickup. But it's noisy in every position.
I record in passive mode.
I have 2 Dingwall NG-3 basses and only 1 has the noise issue.
When I touch the strings, the noise tends to go away. I say tends because I really have to have a firm grip for the noise to go away.
I've tried using different instrument cables, going direct to the audio interface, using a different bass, etc. and I'm very confident that the noise is coming from the bass.

Is it a steady hum or buzz? Or distorting/scratchy? Or something else all together?

So heres what Waltsdog's looks like without the saddles, as I have started the surgery. You can see under the bottom right toothpick there is a 3/8 hole drilled with a Forestner bit to a depth of about 3/16 inch. Then there is a horizontal tiny hole drilled in the inside wall of that original hole leading towards the electronics compartment. of course the G string saddle neatly covers that larger hole. This is for that single ground wire that is bare wire running under all the saddles. Pretty clever way to snake that wire. Actually, I am rather impressed with the PCB in the electronics compartment with the low/med/high tone control pots soldered to it along with a chip or two. Very nice quality pots and selector switch in there. The selector switch does have screws that hold down all the wires so make sure you check that out as well for your noise problem. I can say that my Dingwall was 100% noise free 100% of the time. I can only speculate here as I am hacking it apart, but why did Dingwall go with the larger width pickups for the 4 string Combustion, I mean, the width of these are the width of the EMG40's and those EMG40's are 5 string pickups. The screw holes are like 99.997% on center between the EMG40's and the ones that came out of mine. Perhaps more pickup surface area was needed for the 4 strings becuase of the angle? What I am going to do is put my 2 EMG40's in there a little further back towards the saddles/bridge. I need all the open space I can for my pick landing zone to be free of raised up obstacles. You think the Dingwall electronics compartament is neat and tidy?? Well, it is, but when I get thru with her there will only be 1 pot, a master volume with both EMG's wired in series, wide open, full bore output. Im thinking of just putting in those little black plastic round plugs into the 4 other pot holes that I will not be using, might make the bass 3 pounds lighter without all those knobs. The toggle switch will be the +18volt on/off for the EMG's. This is going to be a fun project, and yes, while taking her apart, I did think for 3 seconds, 'what am I doing', but that passed quickly.

The pickup width is due to both the angle and the fact that the coils are split coils as well, therefore angled in the shells.

I mean, I play all manner of styles, so I’m decent with a pick as well. But anchoring ones thumb solely on the pickup isn’t the best ergonomic choice.

I got to meet Lee at a gig he did with Judith Owen several years ago. Harry Shearer (Judith Owen’s husband) was also there, and was honestly a douchebag when I asked for his autograph. Lee was super friendly, and I’ve had the chance to chat with him at other smaller gigs since then.

I had to look up who Judith and Harry were, and I still don't know who they are..lol.. But I'm glad Lee was nice to you. I got into listning to his YouTube videos while Im working and on one he was talking about his time with Linda Ronstadt doing some showtune and that got me inspired to play one of her songs, and that would normally never happen, as shes a far cry from Autograph...

Maybe they're born with it, maybe it's Maybelline! (Two out of three are, of course, the amazing artwork of Neck Illusions, who I can't say enough good things about. It's marred only by my own imperfect placement, which I'll fix next time I'm ready to tune waaaay down). As I said to the Neck Illusions designer, I like big blocks (and I cannot lie).
