Did my first string change and ended up with strings that are a little long and you end up with a wrap alongside another wrap at the bottom of the tuning post. Is there a rule of thumb for the additional lengthiest the tuner to cut? I looked at the Dingwall video and it didn't show cutting the string. I went with the space between two tuners and thought that would be ok since the tuners are closer together than on other basses that I have.

You want to aim for two wraps around the post. On my Z, Voodoo and previous AB that ends up being I think about two tuner-spacings up, give or take.

If you're using Dingwall strings or other round cores, you'll want to bend the string hard/crimp it then cut it after the bend by about half to three quarters of an inch. That guarantees the core & windings don't release each other, and also give you a bit of string to tuck down the hidey-hole.

It's actually a shorter post on the AB's then counter-sunk so the string has the right angle.

I used to wrap more but differed to Sheldon and it’s worked fine since.

Initially I wasn't digging the Dingwall Nickels that came on my Super J, but now that they're broken in I'm starting to enjoy them quite a bit. I've been a roundcore devotee for the last few years so seeing that they're round is confirming why they're growing on me.

Are Payson's offerings round core as well, or are they hex core? @Blues Cat? I ordered a pack last night so I'll be trying them either way.

Hate it when you’re all done and suddenly the B string (usually for me) goes dull and lifeless with no tone. You place your ear close to the string and you hear that dreaded rattle, the sound of a loose core dancing against the outer windings like it’s laughing at you for the $$$ you just flushed.

gotcha. I’m in the practice of minimal wraps and have not had an issue. I’ve admittedly cut a couple strings too short to achieve even one wrap but have never had issue with its anchor at the bottom of the post or any other issue.

I do think this increases accuracy, reduced twist and what I’ll call “coil slack”(I may have just made that part up) but I do think it’s a thing with over wrapped strings.
If there is any difference I’m sure it’s splitting hairs but.... I guess ultimately I don’t see any real gain by having more wraps.

Here is a few examples of how I normally string up a bass. I don’t recommend anyone to string a bass in a way that is uncomfortable to them but I’d take any of these gigging.

I may have got a little too snippy happy on the maple Z but again even with that zero issue

Ours are hex core. It helps to keep the wraps from coming off the core.
