So my ABZ5’s tone knob has a persistent scratchy pot.

I’ve applied some DeoxIT D100L (carefully with the brush applicator) to the pot.

After about a week or so, the scratchy starts making a comeback.

Short of emptying a bottle of DeoxIT into the pot, any other possible solutions?

I would be using Deoxit Fader (F-series) spray. If that didn't fix it, I'd be replacing it...

Can you get an FD-3N in an AB1? When I order one I was thinking about setting it up with FD-3N in the bridge position, FDV in the middle position, and a super fatty in the neck. Thoughts?

I think it would fit, but the FD3N is the off shore version of the FD3, so unless you liked that specific tone, I’d be inclined to do just FD3. I’ve often thought of a combo like this, though right now I have PTone/FDV/FDV. If I had a SF2, I’d put it in the bridge.

how handy are you?
I once took apart the pots of my '66 Fender Mustang (6 string). I had sprayed Deoxit into the pot shaft and it seized up (wouldn't turn) so I took it apart, it just had bent tabs on the back, cleaned the wafer with deoxit on a q-tip, applied some light grease to the shaft and re assembled.
That was about 8 years ago, and it still works fine.

Probably not that handy. Good idea though. If more DeoxIT spray doesn't work, I'll buy a new pot and install it.

Then I'll rip the old one apart to see if I can destroy...er...fix it. :)

If it's a tiny spec of dust or carbon, it could be as simple as just cycling the pot 0-10 and back a dozen times or so to sweep it clean.

Well...I've cycled the pot about a dozen-times-a-dozen and then some. Perhaps it's a bigger speck of dust? :)

I do appreciate your advice Sheldon!

Keep up the good work! :bassist:

The mistake that most folks make when using DeoxIT is that they think the "cleaner" is all they need. Its not. You need to spray the pot with DeoxIT D5 contact cleaner and let it dry. Then you need to follow up with DeoxIT F5 fader lubricant. Use those two together and you'll never replace a pot ever again. UNLESS...your cat knocks one off the window seal and breaks it. :D

Thanks for this -- appreciate the wisdom (knowledge + experience) that you and everyone at TB bring to the table!

So do you still have the cat? :)

Deoxit is a great fix but it will eventually require more Deoxit. It is like drugs for your electronics. Ha ha. But yeah, if you tried to work it loose then I would use the Deoxit. It shouldn't be needed weekly though.
