Dingwall Owners Club

Good evening from Athens Greece.
I am looking to buy a 5 string 3 pu Dingwall and i was wondering wether a combustion weighs more on average than an ng3.
Thank you in advance

generally speaking the NGs are more consistently lighter with Alder bodies.

the combustions are now all ash vs the older ones which could be ash or alder. The ash bodies often can be heavier as ash can fluctuate.
Just get a combustion weighed first if you go that route and weight is a concern.

Hey folks, prospective Dingwall owner here looking to get some advice on lower tunings and strings.
I'm looking at a 5-string NG3, and plan to use it exclusively for lower-tunings (G# standard and below). The seller will be able to set it up for string gauges of my choice, but I'm a bit stuck there.

For G# standard the seller had recommended string gauges of .154, .118, .090, .067, and .051, but that was before I had let him know of my intention to spend just as much time in drop F# or drop F as in G# standard. I think I like the four smaller string sizes, but was considering going to .160 for the low string. Would drop F tuning be doable with .154? And would G# tuning work out on a .160?

I'd appreciate any input from other Dingwallers with experience with these gauges or tunings. Thanks!

I needed a .170 to make F even minimally not-muddy, but in my opinion, truthfully, going that low is an exercise in futility. I could never, ever, ever get it to sound good. YMMV. F# is about the lowest I would recommend going and I think Dingwall recommends a .170 for that, too.

Lately I’ve been enjoying Dingwall through a ‘67 Sunn 200s and it’s a cool sound.
Anyone else play their’s through a vintage amp?

Not a “real” amp, but I really like how my Super P sounds through the UAD B-15 amp sim.

Lovely amp there!

I don’t currently have a vintage amp, just modern takes on them. I have an Ampeg PF-50T and I just ordered a 5 watt Blackhawk Amplifiers Odin 5 which based off of the older Orange/Matamps.

I was considering picking up either an older Orange or Sunn amp before I found the much more sensible for my situation solution, the Odin 5.

I have played all of my Dingwall’s through tubes including a Sunn 2000s. I love the way they sound together.

I'd think a 160 for G# would be way too big, but you might want to try it if you're also going down to F.

Have you tried pitch shifting? You could set up for G# and pitch down to F/F#.

Pitch shifting down from G#? That's gotta sound like a fart in a bathtub...
Sorry I couldn't resist. Where can I hear some of these super low tunings on recordings? I'm curious now.

Here are a couple low-tuned studio recordings:
Northlane - Rot (Instrumental) - YouTube - drop F
ERRA - Scorpion Hymn [Instrumental] - YouTube - drop F#

Here are a couple low-tuned bass covers on Dingwalls:
Spiritbox - Holy Roller feat. Ryo Kinoshita of Crystal Lake | Bass Cover ベース弾いてみた - YouTube - Drop E, .170 for the low string
Fit for a King | God of Fire [Bass Cover] - YouTube - Drop F, .142 for the low string

This is all making me really look forward to getting my F#0 NG3.

Anybody know if @Sheldon D. ever started offering binding on the Super J necks? Recently been trying to get off my duff and set aside the scratch for the bass I've been dreaming about forever (while HAPPILY playing AB1s the whole while) and realized I haven't followed up to see if this ever became a thing. The Dingwall forum looks like it's been spammed recently by bots selling cranes or some mess so figured this might be the next best place to ask.
