I could be wrong but I think Bill in Spiritbox uses a pitch down to E on some songs.
So, I just got that 5 watt tube amp, Blackhawk Amplifiers Odin-5 and just tried it out with the SJ 4 and Z3 5. It gets my Mesa cab just to the point of loud (playing solo). The clean channel sounds great, the gain channel has a ton of gain on tap- more than needed. The FAC circuit is cool (a big part of that early Orange/Matamp circuit).
I was goofing with a VU meter plugin last night, just to see how my NG3 pickup height was looking - pretty neat way to do it! I noticed my attack varied widely throughout the test, but one thing kept happening - the A string was consistently lower in volume according to the meter. I have string heights properly set according to the setup vid. I couldn't really tell a huge difference through my amp. They seemed relatively even in volume to my ear.
Is this a result of the consistent fb radius on the Combustion/NG? I would assume the compound radius board on the Canadian models (being flatter as you go toward the bridge) would give a more consistent result from string to string with the meter? Depending on attack, obviously..

Knowing nothing of the science and math behind it, could it be that the A frequency itself resonates lower? Have you done this on a different bass too?

This is why I prefer a compound fretboard radius where the strings are flatter over the pickups.
Another downside of the near-vintage NG 9.45” radius board is when I’m playing double thumb behind the board and double-pluck over the pickups as a result. There’s plenty of space over the E, A, and D, but it gets really tight on the G and C. Leads to inconsistent feel and attack.
Among other reasons, this is why I’ll be replacing my NG with a Z3 in a few months.
I have no idea myself! I haven't tried this with a different bass. I was searching around for "hard" measurements on DW pickup heights and noticed a few people set the bass side with a VU meter. Thought I'd give it a whirl.

Ahh.. so there is something to what I was seeing on the meter. I assumed a flatter radius would be more consistent with the flat top of the pickup.
I do basically the same thing - plug into my audio interface and use the input meters to try to get balance between the E and G strings, then balance from pickup to pickup.
Having consistent output from your pickups makes it WAY easier to set everything downstream (onboard EQ, pedals, amps, etc)

Question about the woods used in this bass. Is the neck itself wenge? If not, was it being used there, I love the look of it.
