Not to speak for @BurningSkies, but he's also on the Facebook Dingwall group. A little "light stalking" there shows that the last time he was on TalkBass (October 29th) aligns with the date of his last gig with his band.

His post about that gig on FB was upbeat and indicated that he'll still be playing, just doing something different.

Does anyone know off hand what a fairly base model ABZ 5 string sells for? Or is that going to be a dealer question?

I'd like another 5 string and while an NG or Combustion would be great, I'd like something different. The biggest unknown me is if I'd like the FDV's. The FD3N's in the NG and DBird are great but I tend to favor my older Combustion with the square end pickups. I'm thinking the FDV's would be closer to that, but I'm not sure.

Tell me about the Super P/J 5 string.

One has come up for sale somewhat near me, about a 2 hour drive away. The price seems good but not incredible (I don't want to disclose the price just yet). It's passive, ash body, transparent burst finish, looks to be in perfect condition. So what's a normal price for a used Super P/J 5 string basic model? I can't find many/any for sale...are they rare, or nobody sells them, or Dingwall doesn't sell that many? Compared to something like an AfterBurner, how desirable are they?

Problem is...I recently bought an ABZ 4 string so there went my funds. Loved it so much I jumped on an AB1 5 string last week..there went more funds. Now this Super PJ5 pops up! I COULD get it but I think I would feel guilty about buying so much stuff for myself :)

Is it a Super J P/J or a Super P P/J? Do you know if it has the older skinnier SuperFatty pickup in the bridge position (70's spacing)?

They feel and sound totally different. First off, it feels like the whole bass is two positions shorter while playing it standing. The neck is wider and the string spacing at the bridge is 19mm as opposed to the Super long scale models. I find the string spacing is more of an adjustment than the scale length.

The Supers are more traditional sounding as you might expect. The B-strings are good (my SJ5 P/J is considerably better than my SP5 P/J), but more in line with the character of the other strings. They are not the "voice of God" like the 37" models. Mine both have alder bodies. I find ash to have more of a natural mid scoop whereas alder tends to have an overall even response.

I think you talked me out of it :) Mostly due to the 'voice of God' comment as I already have a 37" scale AB1 and I have 3 other basses with 35" B strings, so since I don't really have the extra money and I don't need it I may pass on it. It would sure be neat to have, but with an ABZ and an AB1 I don't think I would ever play it. Also I'm sure it's not 6.8 pounds like my ABZ!

Also, the body could be alder. I thought it had a transparent finish but I mis-remembered. I have a pic of it but I'm holding off on posting it for now.

I took my recently acquired ng3-6 to a gig. It sounds fabulous, the active eq really makes dialing the right tone easy. When I got home I just decided to change the strings from nickle to SS. There was a dead C string in the set, i put the single nickle c string back on. This is the first bass in my life that I prefer nickle strings over SS. But I'll play these for a couple more gigs before I change them again.
