I get pretty excited about glow in the dark stuff, and I love the Luminlay products. Huge bang for the buck, and an easy DIY if you’d like glowing side dots.

I’ve gone down the airbrush rabbit hole, and discovered Lumilor paints.

A paint that uses a power source. Turn it on, it glows. Power down and it can disappear behind airbrush art.

Here’s an artist I found on YouTube. The video is long, and a great airbrush tutorial, but you can skip to the last few minutes for the full reveal.


Ryan @ Bloodshot airbrush does amazing stuff, but this is over the top cool. I’ve learned a ton from this guy in just a couple weeks. Being snowbound does that.

Just think of the possibilities with the Dingwall artists and luminous paint.

Quick question for fellow D-roc users.
Are you running Nickel or Stainless strings?
My Standard 5 came with Nickels ( I believe ) and I've gotten another pack for when I change, but can't decide whether to try a set of Stainless.
I'm assuming they have slightly more "zing".

You really want to check’s Eugene’s payson strings shootout - it’s extremely well done. Can’t remember a better shootout of any sort.



Personally using Payson nickels - very versatile, more comfortable on my finge4s than stew, and I find the Payson D and G more consistent in timbre with the lower strings than Dingwalls’s.

The FD3's sound waaaay better in the NG3 than they did in Moby. Much more "grunt" and beef than the FD3N's. This is what this bass should sound like. I wired them all in series as well, bridge + middle is absolutely MASSIVE.

Just wish I could have actually tried the FDV's, but it's good to know I'm not crazy... the online descriptions of the FDV's sounded nothing like what I was hearing coming from Moby, lol. At least that issue is solved.

I haven't played one with the FD3s, but the FD3Ns in the NG3 I briefly had weren't my favorite.

Depends. There are both I believe.

The ones that look like EMGs should be EMG size, the others (FD1s?)are Bart size I believe.

Speaking of pickups, what have ya’ll liked in the J of your Super PJs? Both of my Dingwalls have SF2s and man, I love them but interested in anyone’s experience there. I may be specking out a bass real soon.

As a newer Dingwall convert, I'm curious about who makes their pickups. I see that Combustions use G&B pickups, which I've not had a lot luck with. Both of my Dingwalls are older Canadians. The 4 string has EMG40 sized pickups with Gold Dingwall wording printed in the corners. My 5 string has squared off soapbars with a large 'Dingwall' inset across the entire width of the pickups. Are both of these made in house by Dingwall?

And how about the newer rounded pickups in the Canadians? Who are those made by?

Before I answer that let me make it clear that I have never played a Combustion or any Dingwall with G&B pickups.

But, every time I've run across a G&B pickup, replacing it with something better has always brought a pretty big improvement. For example Lakland 44-01, various PRS SE guitars, various Godin guitars.

Ah. Sounds more like a preference thing, if I'm reading correctly? Have you listened to many Combustion/NG videos, if they use those pickups? Every Combustion and NG that have gone through my hands has been great, top to bottom. I'm guessing Dingwall dictates the parameters of the pickups to G&B, and knowing Sheldon and crew, they won't skimp or cheapen out there.

Do not quote me on this but Dingwall did use to make all DINGWALL pick ups in house throughout the iterations.

for a while the combustions used the same square shell EMG style as the ABZ model and I was still under the impression they were completed in house(that part I don’t really have a clue I just believe that as they were one in the same as a Canadian model as you could get a square shell P tone, Etc. probably bought the shells) then when the combustions changed to rounded shells, somewhere around 2018(?) I believe the pick ups designated FD-3n were made production not in Saskatoon, where as the rest of the pick ups, which are on the Canadian made basses, are still made in Saskatoon. Looking under recent pickups… recent-leee, they all have inspected by JD tags on them.

The FD-3n production pick ups are fantastic pups. They are ballzy as all heck. Clear and punchy. They just don’t seem to have the same character, articulation and clarity as the FD3 and FDVs I’m familiar with but they are definitely hotter in my experiences.

Lets be real. Pickup manufacturer isn't nearly as important as how a bass sounds as a sum of it's parts. Basses aren't carrying as much sonic information as guitar pickups (harmonics in particular). The good thing is if you love the scale length, playability and overall feel of a Dingwall but want to change the pickups there are options. When I pay 2k or above for a guitar or bass the pickups aren't a big part of the equation because 1) they're usually really good or 2) if they don't work out for me they're easily replaced.
