I'm failing to understand how replacing a 500k with a 500k will result in a large difference. Granted, pots have a pretty wild tolerance (iirc +/- 20% ish), but even then I wouldn't expect drastic differences. Certainly sounds, to me, more like a possibly bad pot than anything, in that case.

I could see where a larger pot of the same resistance level would give you a longer sweep through the range, so maybe a little finer control over the volume?

It's not rocket science. Upgrading to a higher quality pot will improve your sound. I wish i had the technical terms to explain it.

If you are already using a high quality pot, such as a CTS or Bourne then what I'm talking about is moot. I can't think of a single case where I've swapped an Alpha mini pot for a full size CTS and someone was disappointed.... "Yeah, take me back to that blanket covered sound, the clarity and openness is just too much". :eyebrow:

I'm not here to argue. I was just hoping to offer advice to those thinking of considering swapping pickups to try swapping the Vol pot first.

Have a great day y'all..

If you ever do that again for someone, record a before and after. It would be interesting to hear.

I'm sure it does - I've never done it in a bass but many Les Pauls. It can make a significant difference.

Hi all, I wanted to give an update so I didn't come off as just some entitled ranter. I actually love this NG3 so far it just took some getting used to because it's different than almost every other bass in almost every way. Ironically the fanned frets were the easiest thing to get used to. That adjustment was really natural.

My only gripe was the sharp saddles, which says alot because I'm super picky. Every other part of this bass is on point 100%.

Peter from Dingwall reached out to me and the newer rounder licensed saddles are available from the shop for $25 apiece. Not bad compared to $60-70 for Babicz. So I'm going to order a set and then the bass will be 100% kickass.

My favorite part about this beast is the neck. Oh man that neck with with rolled edges and tiny frets and glossy but not sticky finish. Its almost an optical illusion because it looks gloss and feels satin. I'm obsessed with necks and this is one of the best ever. Cheers.

New vs old saddle pic Peter sent. There is a noticeable difference to my eyes.

^^ another reason I really enjoy my ABZ and D-Roc Standard 5 with solid bridges. And another important thing, but this maybe me only, but still: among the other basses I’ve owned before, my Dingwall basses are probably the only ones I’m 100% happy with every bit, including hardware and pickups, so no need for n any upgrade or mods. And throughout the years I’ve noticed that as soon as you start to upgrade anything in your bass it’s a clear indication that it’s not a keeper and it’ll be gone soon. The longest I’ve owned were the basses that had no mods and were good ‘out of the box.’

This could also be how the solder lugs are attached. Our personal favorite is how CTS does it. The cheaper the pot, the more chances the lugs will become slighly loose as soon as you solder them.

I used to feel the same way. I think I’ve got a bit more comfortable exploring simple mods. For example, adding the six way switch. This only made a crazy versatile bass that much more so….. this prompted me to sell a different bass though!!! ;)

Interesting. I did not know this. Is this a common bug with cheaper Alpha pots? I've swapped a LOT of Alphas for CTS. I've had the same result every time as far as the tone "improving" to my ears.

If it's a case of lugs getting loose when immediately being soldered, it seems like Alpha would be a poor choice to start with, no? I understand it's what's available for overseas manufacturing, but if it's destined to fail from the start... I'm a little lost on that.

Alright, deposit is down on a Purple Super PJ4. So far: I am thinking, swamp ash with wenge/wenge. Luminlay side dots and Speedo bars (I am considering purple inlays though), matching headstock, black pg.
Main question is what pickup for the J? I want a rock n roll bass, good mids (supposedly swamp ash lacks some mids but IDK if my experience aligns).
I need to get the shade of purple right. I want this exact same shade as my old D-Bird here:

I commissioned this bass in 2018, Pearl Purple Matte was a color option for the Custom D-Birds but I thought this was a Candy of some kind. Any Dingwall experts have an opinion?
I may reach out to Rufus Mann as I sold the bass to him. Maybe I can get the SN and contact Dingwall and verify.
