It looks like the stock preamp is still installed (emg bts). With each pickup soloed I was hearing similar response, except the bridge pickup sounded less scooped than the neck one. The A string is the loudest of all the strings. I would like to try the B booster, just to be sure.

Just bought a natural satin ABI 5-string with a flame maple top off GC Used for $1800. Should get here soon! I could not be more excited. I found it after another deal on a different bass fell through, and I'm glad it did, because the Dingwall is even better. I'm buying without trying it, but, Sheldon's reputation being what it is, I'm not worried.

Looking forward to being a part of this club :D

Enjoy! Sheldon is a mad-scientist and a hella cool guy. His basses may seem unusual or intimidating at first, but for me, it only took about five minutes of playing one to realize that the only thing scary about Dingwall basses is how crazy good they are! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :D

Hah! Rodney and I were talking about that very bass a half dozen or so posts above! We will want to hear all about it!

BTW, I purchased every one of my Dingwalls sight unseen, and have never regretted any of them! And my most recent purchase is the best of all of them!

Perhaps the one other scary thing is just how fast one starts trying to acquire the next one! And the next one after that!:hiding:

This is the real problem right here. My Super P5 wont be here until November and I am already thinking about a 4. Why? Well, just because, that's why.

I have put myself on restriction by not contemplating additional purchases with one on the build table. As long as The House of Dingwall stays crazy busy, I can still afford mac AND the cheese.

Congrats to the new Dingwallians. We need to see pics !

For you experienced Dingwall players, I wanna pick your brain a bit. I currently own a Combustion, but am saving up to upgrade to either a Z3 or an AB1 6 string. For the Combustion I committed blasphemy and put active EMGs in it, along with a BQC pre-amp. I didn't dislike the stock pickups, they just weren't for me. Anyway, I know these basses are super versatile and any one of them can do whatever you need it to, but which one would you guys recommend heavier metal/hardcore/punk stuff? As far as I can tell either would be ideal but I'll have to buy one without actually playing it. As far as I know I'm the only Dingwall player in my area so I have nowhere/no one else to try a different model out with. I played an AB1 back in 2008 when Periphery played at a local bar and they crashed at my drummer's house. I remember loving it, but I was also a tad bit inebriated at the time so I don't remember what I loved about it. I also know there's a huge price difference between the 2, but don't really mind so long as it's worth it. I appreciate any and all comments or suggestions.

1 - LOL.

2 - I'd go with what feels good. I'm assuming you will run some sort of fuzz in those styles, so the bass tone will get pretty altered there. I'd think finding the right pedal for that would be a bigger factor than the bass itself. Perhaps you want a something with a higher output, like a P-tone PU.

Depending on the type of tone you're going fir, I think either of those would work great. I played an AB1 for a while recently and it had tons of clarity which is great for heavy, overdrive laden mixes. That being said, I can't think of a more versatile pickup/switching system than the Z3, except for a Z3 with the switchblade system.

I agree that a bass with clarity would be good for that type of mix. I hate it when I see one of those metal type bands and I can't hear one damn note the bassist is playing because he's overpowered by the guitards in the band!

On the other hand, even low-end clarity may not be enough to get around that problem. You might just need a 1200 watt lead sled into two 4 ohm 410s!

That bass from GC used arrived. Definitely aftermarket preamp, no idea what though. A minor bump knocked it loose in the cavity and there's some hum. I'm going to open it up and see what I can do. Other than that the bass is wonderful, I can see myself loving it for a long time. I'll post in detail more later.

One thing though, the knobs are not original, and they don't even match eachother. I'd like to buy a new set of knobs (5), but they cost 100 dollars on the dingwall store. Any particular reason for this? Can I get them cheaper?
