Random x-post from the Monique thread. Since I've made my frustration with my ABZ known, I thought I'd post this up, showing the differences between the ABZ and my P bass. When I recorded these, I found myself liking the ABZ better. I guess I may have a "recording" bass and a "live" bass.

i just went right into my m-box, into Logic, with no tweaks, and using a very basic drum loop from the stock set of clips.

On the Guitar Center used site there is a Dingwall Afterburner listed for $1800. The listing says Afterburner I but it has 5 knobs. So, it obviously has a preamp in it. But it does look like an ABI with a flamed maple top. I called them and they looked at the preamp but could not identify what it actually was. The guy said it was definitely not an Aguilar and did not appear to be a Glock because the PCBs were not red. So, it may not have been done at the factory. Still, could be a cool bass.

That does not look like a factory configuration. Sheldon does make what is sometimes referred to as an AB I.5 that has whatever latest pre-amp in it that he is using for ABIIs. But that arrangement looks like a V-V with 3 band EQ.

Also, with Sheldon's 1.5 configuration, as well as his ABII configuration, the bottom 3 knobs are arranged to follow the curvature of the body, whereas that one looks like the bottom 3 knobs are in a straight line.

That's my thinking as well. Especially since the preamp does not appear to be a glock or aggie. But, if it were originally an AB, it would have had a switch on it, as well. Which, is not there. So, not sure what is really up with this one.

While the playing is not super technical, it gives the listener a chance to hear the actual tone.

How many times do you watch a YT video thinking you're going to get a sound sample, and a guy starts playing super staccato, or slapping.

I installed a set of the Payson medium light nickel strings on my AB-1 six string yesterday.
I'm very pleased with them. Very punchy and solid sounding strings.

As always, the Payson strings went on with no problem. I spent a few minutes tweaking the string height at the saddles, tightened the truss rod slightly, and the action came out lower and cleaner than with previous strings.

The strings sound very balanced across the board.

I switched out some Circle K's that had very similar diameters. The Payson strings are slightly stiffer and have a nice, meaty thunk to them.

I like the way they feel and sound.

Did you ever re-wire the neck pickup to series? I think you'd get some increased body without giving up the clarity.

Not necessarily. The flip switch was for the BlueEqube function which Sheldon eventually eliminated I believe.

Also, my ABII-5 is old enough that it actually had a push-pull on the volume control (active/passive) and same on the Treble control (BlueEqube).

Sheldon is constantly innovating and refining, and there is a lot of evolution of the models over the years. He will alSo do the occasional one-off as well. So it can be tough to tell the etymology of his basses sometimes just by looking at them anyway. But he seems quite consistent in his stylistic cues, which I really like.

Been enjoying my new (to me) Combustion. It seems to be one of the first ones produced based on the serial # 00019. Still in amazing shape, like it was never played. It would be cool to talk with the original owner as I understand some work was done to it.:bassist:

Same here! Mine is 00125. What work or mods have been done?

I am interested in upgrading the preamp at some point. If anyone has put in an Aguilar OBP-2 or 3 in their Combustion I'd love to hear about it.

It was supposedly upgraded to FD-3 pickups. I think only one of the pickups was upgraded (bridge position), though, based on my preliminary observations. The B string is noticeably weaker than the E and A strings when played live, and confirmed by computer recording. Still waiting to hear back from Sheldon on that. I haven't looked in the cavity to see what preamp it has, but I need to. Needless to say, it's a Dingwall and it sounds and plays beautifully.

How is the B when each pickup is soloed?

With a serial number that low I would suggest the difference in volume would be solved with the addition of the "B" string booster. Added one to my combustion and the volume is incredibly even across the strings. Far better than any other 5 string I've played.
