I'm not too worried about it. It's a nice bass and I feel like it was priced appropriately. I just need to fix the trash set up on it. Action is sky high.

The NG3 I got had action that was too low for me. Haha.
Some people like it sky high. Different strokes, I guess.

You can get really physical with a bass that has high action. Pop and pluck the hell out of it.

I'm glad you were able to sort out the 'hack job' done to this fine instrument. If I understand correctly, someone put import (FD3n) pickups in it and botched the job?
I often assume it’s from someone who just plays, never changes strings, or understands about set up. Ability aside…. Reminds me of me many years ago. Ha. I’m sure my first bass never got a string change for probably 6 yrs….. guilty.
At some point an owner did a less than stellar job installing a DGTC. Another owner did their best to clean that up, but kinda missed the mark. It had the older style 3X and s/p toggles. Without the screw terminals, it's a little bit of a project. There's a lot of connections when you have the s/p switches.
The pickups were quoted as being FDV by more than one seller. When I removed them, they were listed as the FD-3 (the canadian version). Possibly down the line they were switched to FD-3, but it could just be they were misinformed. The FD-3 pups sound GREAT in my NG3. I wired those all in series, the M+B setting hits like a freaking hammer!
i think i will go a bright turquoise on an ab2. F# 6er. 3x. Darkglass preamp, matching headstock d, blue luminlay dots. Wenge neck/board.
Pretty colour… massive sound.
I'm unsure. I no longer have any Combustions/NGs to compare to, and never noticed enough to check when I did.
On another topic - have anyone heard of an "Afterburner 1 Elite" model? Someone is selling an AB1, and in the comments thread, another person said it's an "ABI Elite". I've never heard of that model before, and a couple searches isn't turning anything up.
The only naming variation I can think of is AB2 HS - which stood for a heavy/solid if I recollect right. So AB2s that weren’t semi-Hollow and weighed more. I believe they were all Walnut bodies but I could be mistaken on that piece.

Yeah, those HSes look neat, I've wanted to try one (but not own one).
The AB1.5s were a limited special thing that went solely through Jive Sound, if I recall correctly. I forget the specifics - I want to say they were before AB1s could be ordered with a preamp (only AB2 could), but Jive worked out a deal for active AB1's, hence, AB1.5. I might be wrong there.
This is the first I've ever heard of "Elite".
I had one of those AB1.5s in "trans-blue jean blue" with a flame-maple top.
I think it had an Aquilar preamp in it, but I could be mistaken.
It was a VERY cool bass - probably my favorite of the 3 Afterburners that I owned.
My first AB was in 2003, before they had suffixes - but would be what we call an AB1 now.
The next one was a burl-top tigerburst AB2 that was drop-dead gorgeous, but felt too civilized for me.
The AB1.5 was a nice middle-point, and I replaced the neck pickup with a P-Tone, which REALLY delivered my favorite tones.
I only sold the AB1.5 when I realized that I was just happier playing 4-string basses...and I found a gentleman willing to sell his 4-string Z2!

I've decided to post the new to me ABZ for sale. It sounds great, but I don't think it's for me. I prefer the newer Dingwall necks.
You might be able to just wet-sand and buff out this clear finish and get a pretty decent result -- if it doesn't work, you can still go forward with the refin.
Many years ago, I traded for an '81 G&L L-2000. The bass showed up with an awful "baby poo brown" refin and I almost sent it back in disgust. But then I played it, and that neck was like MAGIC - so I stripped the body and did my own DIY refin, and it was a great bass (that I wish I never sold)
As you mentioned, the level of effort you're willing to sink it it will depend on how much you bond with the bass.
I have an '83 Squire Precision that I bought for $89, then dropped $250 of parts on, because it's a great player.
