Dingwall Owners Club

AB2-6, 3FDV, Glock, s/p switches, swamp ash + wenge/wenge, speedo markers, maple x-top, maple contrast layer, light yellow (the "Happy Sun" bass)
Sounds nice!!! Will you do a yellow burst or translucent?

For me: Ab2 3x fd3, f#, dg preamp, wenge neck, standard dots, luminlay side dots… and likely aqua. I would do p-tone if they had one for a six.

@AB Nate @Katoosie
wassup guys I just got a Dingwall D-roc Standard 5 yesterday so I'm now in the Spector and Dingwall club ;).
Was only able to mess around with the bass for a few minutes before I unexpectedly knocked out until this morning. feels pretty good so far, of course not in the same league as my NS5XL (not really fair to compare the two honestly, maybe if it was a Canadian one.) Nevertheless it's a nice quick feeling, well balanced bass with awesome rockin' aesthetics!
The B and E strings are KILLER. Gonna run it through my VTbass DI when I get a chance later on tonight, since I was only able to give it a spin straight to my amp yesterday. This is my first passive bass since I sold my Ric last year so I'm hoping I can dial some similarly gnarly tones on this. No pictures yet, didn't get around to that.

Former Spector endorsing artist here. After I bought my Dingwall ABZ5 I stopped scrolling through classifieds here and on Reverb ;) P.S. I’ve owned (and sold) 10 USA Spector basses. Go figure;)

I really enjoy the D roc shape. Before I got my euro I was SERIOUSLY considering a 5 string droc. Kinda wish I got it...

And that ABZ I showed, damn.
Still kicking myself over it @AB Nate

Oh and dont forget to show pics and tell us about it @Jason Bonilla
No pics = no bass, right?

No, stop this! I won't turn to the Ding side! :nailbiting:

but yea, I really like Spector. Dingwalls look and sound great but the combustion + darkglass sound is so overused at this point that I'm honestly kind of sick of it. thats why I decided to get a D-roc rather than a combustion or NG3. I'm sure many probably had the same sentiment about Spector and Warwick when they were at the forefront of metal and rock back in the 80s and 90s, so maybe I'm just a 23 year old with the heart of a baby boomer. but yea if I like the D-roc enough long term, maybe id save up for a used Canadian model to give it a shot and see if it turns me away from Spector. I know AB Nate is also a Spector fan but mostly a Dingwall guy. so maybe there's something to it. But I've already spent much more on NS5 than any guy my age should be spending, so a Canadian Dingwall is a few years away haha.

Not calling anyone out ever, but I laugh whenever I see people talking about how the “Dingwall and Darkglass” tone is overused or getting old. As a thing it has been around since 2012, right? :roflmao: At least that’s about when Nolly started gaining notoriety for using the combination on tour with Periphery.

This has been beaten to death, but this website has a funny mix of people who are constantly looking for new sounds and people who are chasing sounds from the 1960s.

I partially want to stick around TB just to see what’s hot and what’s not in 5, 10, 15+ years. Musicians are a funny bunch!

People will be complaining that their new "lead sled" amps just don't "slam" the way the Class D amps did when they started playing.

I can't even remember what I was talking about here, 17.5 years ago...

I'm sorry sir but you've deeply offended me by posting this as its clearly aimed at me though you "weren't calling anyone out" and I WILL be calling the admins, FBI, and your employer you can have no doubts about that!... :smug:

All jokes aside, its just like I said, look at me right now, in love with Spector and Tech 21 and all, but I assure you that this was the argument about a decade or two ago; "Spector + the Sansamp bassdriver is overused and getting old" as I know there was a time when Spector was THE bass for metal. I'm sure in a decade I'll be Reminiscing about the days when people were using Dingwalls and Darkglass instead of the Apple iBass and iPreAmp. I only say Ding and Dark are overused simply because its what seems to be true, it's not a bad sound, its just everywhere.

We each find our own paths, and those paths are informed by our experiences and goals, as well as our surroundings. You can't throw a stone in the hard rock and metal scene and get _that typical_ Dingwall tone. It works wonderfully well - obviously, or else it wouldn't be so used! So in that small slice of music that's being produced and made now (and the past ~10 years), it's always there. So I get the "I'm bored of it" angle.

Overall I feel those scenes (don't get me wrong, I've been playing in those circles, in original bands, for 20+ years now) are due for a big time shake up anyway. Someone like Nolly comes along and tosses a Dingwall shaped grenade in there and everyone takes notice, and work towards emulating it. Then after a few years of that, a high percentage of things start to sound identical, or at least similar enough to be, well, overplayed.

The beauty of things is, even with a DGTC loaded Dingwall, and even a Dingwall amp and cab, there's _so much more_ available right there at your fingertips. Just cos it can easily sound _like that_ (I don't even have to describe it, because everyone here knows what I mean), doesn't mean it has to. So it can appears both the "I want to sound like Nolly did in 2013" and the "I need something different". To each their own, and hopefully everyone is enjoying the journey. Any component in our signal chain - player very much included - can be changed to sound drastically different. We spend a lot of time talking mods, tweaking, and going off into truly esoteric directions in support of all of that.

People change, too. What I chase now is different than what I chased 20 years ago. The options I have now are almost overwhelming...

The “dingwall sound” aka “darkglass sound” is very much a choice thing. If you want it you can get it… but there are many other sounds also. For me it is more about the extended scale benefits with low tunings. I also love the aesthetic, and canadian heritage.

but i get it… if all the kids have one… many naturally dont because of that. Me… i am at a point where i dont care. I want the best tool for the job. And in my collection… dingwalls get the low tunings.

Like stingrays in the 90’s. But back to my other post… part of it is low tuning and the physics of making it work better. It is a good tool for that job.

mind you in 5-10 yeara… expect to see many 37 inch scales and low tunings… but way more Ibanez, spector, etc… all with fan frets and 37 scale or similar. It is already happening… dingwall just made it a thing first.

I did the NG-2 and B7K thing for a long while, and I eventually ended up finding my zen with a D-Bird and an X7 with the distortion dialed all the way down. The Sansamp YYZ was a very close 2nd to the X7, but the X7 crushed everything else to my ears once I got used to the sound of the compressed low end.

I have also never got the feeling that the Dingwall and Darkglass pair is as ubiquitous as others see it. I am still a big metal head with a wide range of tastes, and I continue to get stoked whenever I hear a Dingwall on a track because it seems pretty rare to me.

Maybe it’s overdone in the more proggy subgenres? I love Periphery, but most of their peers (in my mind that’s bands like TesseracT, Monuments, Veil of Maya, The Contortionist, and Twelve Foot Ninja) have very different approaches to bass guitar.

believe me Amigo, some Spectors are pure slayers. You know I dig them and I do so for a very different sound and feel then Dingwall. They definitely have earned their spot in the bass hall of fame.

A big thing about the dingwalls for me is how they Cut!!! Lots of instruments can be adjusted to cut in a mix but none stick out the same way.
Mixing, mastering etc, many basses sound amazing on many recordings but, at least to me,
Playing live for (what’s left) my audible frequency range, nothing cuts into a mix like a Dingwall. Active/Passive/whatever… they just do it.

I’ve taken both to practice and the dingwall is just easier to hear defined.

the list goes on why we are all lovers of these amazing instruments but the CUT is a huge take away for me.

The other is, nothing plays as fast as a long scale neck.
For me the Z neck is the fastest neck, I think, in existence and that is another clear determining factor on which I want to play when playing with others.

I admit I don’t think these factors matter as much in many styles of music but the stuff I like, it sure makes it easier.

One thing I’ve heard a few times over is people with come up and be like, “I don’t get it!!”
They played some ones poorly set up combustion with dead strings….. or some other reason to perceive an ENTIRE variety of the instruments created by one company. That’s just silly.

The Drocs are deadly… but they are what they are. Like it or hate it.

The Supers are something different all together. Sound, feel, “style”.

and of course a Canadian made long scale AB or Z (mainly Z) are completely different again.

Get you a $7k Z in your hand with wenge neck and compare it to a $7k NS…. You’ll have a better comparison indeed…..

hahahha. Not saying it will suck you in but….

And nobody has been able to make a worthy rival. Not just first. Better
