It's pretty well documented in a number of other building threads that it can be an issue. I suspect when comparing CF to a very dense/heavy wood it would be comparable. For lighter woods it appears to be a weight savings when they're omitted. I'm no expert. I own a Status neck which is a very thin layup and is hollow. Despite being hollow it weights almost the same as a similar Warmoth maple neck that I own. Given that single comparison the wood is considerably lighter by volume than the CF since one is solid, the other is hollow and they both weight the same.

Perhaps to be a bit pedantic, but, there is a huuuuuge variety of what "graphite" / "carbon fiber" is. There is a huge amount of material difference in them, which influence their mass and density wildly. I would be kind of surprised if the same CF is used in reinforcement rods as is used in say a Status neck, but, I'm not TOO up to date on the exact materials either uses (and I'm not sure it's publicly available information).

It's difficult to keep up with all your posts here so I'm just going to jump in on the end one. I don't think it was ever an option. If you want to see current options, get with a dealer or Dingwall directly on a build sheet - it has them all clearly laid out, and, Dingwall isn't in a position to really stray from it right now. Perhaps some one-offs in the past had things that weren't standard, but, those are few and far between.

It's best to go straight to the source when you're going to a Canadian build. They'll have all the latest answers with the most correct information for you, instead of misinformation and conjecture on a forum.

Sure… and i did go straight to dingwall on this one. They just replied today. Fast replies. But the options list i have been provided from both dingwall/vendor is circa 2020, so i like to be sure nothing has changed. Not everything on the website is 100% up to date either. I cant see the other poster lying, thus my curiosity. Devil is in the details. I try to sort the misinformation from the rest.

I also do message the vendor… but they always need to message dingwall to get my answer… so i just bypass the vendor until i am finalizing the build (soon!).

I definitely DON'T recommend doing this. It leads to an out of sync communication chain and adds a lot of room for errors and problems. Keep working with your vendor, even if they are simply "man in the middle".

If Dingwall gave you a 2020 build sheet, that must be what they're using now. No one here is going to have anything more up to date than what Dingwall has directly - unless Sheldon comes in and drops something for us... but I can't imagine him doing that here before getting his sales channel square.

I concur. I ride bikes and the variety of carbon fibre is immense. The f1 grade high modulus stuff is just amazing. Out of pure curiosity i wonder what many builders use to reinforce necks. I assume high modulus ud in hollow tubes.

I bypassed due to out of sync communication and an errors on my original build sheet. So i went into “i will find out what can be done and give you the final specs when they are required” mode. It is what it is.

When were told that carbon fibre reinforced necks an option? I just messaged dingwall sales and was told it is no longer an option… but was for some necks in the past.

Hum, weird, they suggested it to me without me even asking. Because my action is really low

On the website, carbon reinfocement is in the Z necks
"Neck Reinforcement
The double expanding truss-rod style is one of the industry standards. Carbon fibre is standard on the Z."

Perhaps they were suggesting me a Z instead and I did not understand that..

That would make sense. Thanks.

What might also make sense is them being willing to go a bit more outside the box for higher profile artists.:bassist:

So based on the conversation we had here last week(ish), I had decided to try a set of Payson strings for my SP5. I just went to place my order and UGH it's $20 USD for international shipping on a $35 pack of strings. That's $70 (CAD) for a single set of strings. :(. I've paid more than that before (*cough*TI Flat*cough*), but never for NPS rounds.

Dingwall strings are slightly more cost effective at "only" $52 CAD for the set incl. shipping, so I ordered a set of NPS Dingwall medium scale. If I like them then I can start ordering multiple sets at a time to save on shipping.

The GHS Pressurewounds that I have on there right now sound really good, but I find myself wanting just a little more bite with the tone control at centre detent.

Well I am still unsure of ordering, I have too many basses, got to sell a few before I would feel it is reasonable to buy a new bass again, wait time is long enough that a lot can happen meanwhile..

I am starting to consider a Z3 again. Even if the strings are too close from the edges, I did get used to it and the sound was HUGE

What is becoming a reality, is that Dingwall is slowly becoming my favourite bass, in a tight competition with Le Fay basses. I’ve also had Modulus which I am completely over with, and I am also getting over Fodera basses. Never got any kind of endorsement because I am too unfaithful to just 1 brand :roflmao: so not sure about Dingwall being much interested in making me an artist! I believe it was just a random suggestion to a random customer.

At least the TI flats are worth every penny.

lol yeah, true! I wasn’t complaining about the TIs at all. In fact, loving the TIs on my main Fender P4 (and not wanting to change them) kinda started me on the thought process that I needed a separate P bass for round wound strings… definitely passive… maybe a 5-string… maybe a Dingwall… yadda yadda yadda I’m posting in this thread now. :)

A lot of players usually order x4+ sets and that gets you in a more reasonable shipping cost of $5 per set.

I'm in trouble now. Have no idea where it is going or if it is spoken for, but I wish it was available and I had the funds... (though I prefer it was a 5, cause I have a 4).

i would love to play a z. The body imho is the perfect choice for fancy woods. But the ab is just so good… so for the moment i am sticking with it for my build.

the fiver neck the ab is pretty efficient in size. If the z is narrower that is impressive.

it is narrower than my NG3 but oddly not as comfortable, and I’m not sure that the rounded edges are the reason

The fretboard of my ab1 is not as rounded at the edges as my ng… but it still feels great. It is probably a hands thing (we are all different). I am not too fussy about neck shapes/sizes. Jazz, ric, dingwall 5… all great for me. The only neck i recall just detesting was a 90’s fender deluxe 5 string jazz bass. That fiver was neck heavy, and i could never get fully satisfied with how the neck felt. I hated it.

Well, I found a couple of glamour shots of mine in a Dingwall FB post. For some reason it's referred to as both an ABZ and AB-I. Right at the end of the description, it says that the bass is available at John Fox Bass. It's not, as it is in my bedroom. That's okay, I don't mind helping to steer business to John.

I was admiring it. Nice combo visually with the maple neck
