Dingwall Owners Club

I’ve been told to try this on my NG3, thing is I’ve played a Droc and it was way LOUDER and had way more punch than my NG3 with the preamp on and off. It’s new so I’d rather trade it. I’m not touching anything on it as whomever the new owner will be they can decide what it can be.
Theres a slight tone difference between the D-Roc and NG due to body woods and dimensions but the difference in volume likely comes down to the rotary switch. Replacing the 3X switch with a D-Roc switch is a simple and easy job for an electronics tech. Might save a lot of time a trouble to just replace the switch.

So that is something which can be done ? That is awesome !!! Thank you !

Lol it wasn’t made clear, things about using the word “balls” and whether or not I was using the the preamp and how and a few other things were what was discussed :roflmao::roflmao::laugh:

Bud, I dunno how you missed it, but it was talked about at least three times:

Well only 1 of those setting is the same in both basses and that’s the bridge. If your bridge quieter it’s probably just wired parallel.

all the other settings are not comparable as per the diagram.

One thing I haven’t seen you describe is where you had the pickup selector for each. They are very different setups. Only position one, all else being ruled out (and I’m curious about the pickup positions, as mentioned earlier) is the same between them.

So, the full switch position breakdown is:

NG3
Pos1, series bridge pickup
Pos2, series bridge and parallel middle, wired in series
Pos3, series bridge and series neck, wired in parallel
Pos 4, series neck pickup

D-Roc
Pos1, series bridge pickup
Pos2, series bridge and series middle, wired in parallel
Pos3, series middle pickup
Pos4, series bridge and series middle, wired in parallel, then in series with parallel neck.

Along with the D-Roc pickups all being somewhere over a centimeter closer to the neck.

All adding up to NOTHING being remotely wired the same between them, except for position 1, and even that’s in a little different a position.

So question from a dummy

how is the drock switch attributing to a louder output?
Well, especially in the "all three pickups on" position, you just gain a lot more output. I'd guess that position 2 on the 3x switch is louder than position 2 on the DB switch (series vs parallel), but, would guess that all others are louder on the DB switch, because it's selecting different pickups that the 3x doesn't.

I'm also not clear on why louder is being a meaningful metric though. It seems an odd thing to get hung up about, with all the various tools available to equalize volume at pretty much every stage between fingers and ears.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the metric we were comparing was quantity of balls.

Perfect timing, I was just looking if I could find some info for my poormans-home-hobby-build version of the D-bird (slightly bigger body/mix with tbird, hope Seldon doesn't mind me postin it here :p)

Only difference is that I got a bridge - neck - bridge setup instead of neck - bridge - neck
And the pickups are FDV

Mockup of what I got so far (HW not screwed on yet, currently need to finish the fretwork and solder the electronics):

I would say that’s as valid to post in here as the “in-progress” pics I put up months ago, of what would become the “Dinganez”.

Which is finished, and I’ve been a good boy and not posted it. Maybe I’ll sneak it in alongside my D-Bird, when that comes back from repair/refinish. :D

Some of us like that and use it as a metric. Plain and simple…but even Sheldon said there is a difference. Which is what my primary issue was…you and a few others got hung up and the wording I used which makes no sense. But it is what it is. I thank Sheldon and those who provided input to help. I know which direction I’m headed with my NG3. :hyper::bassist:

I, on the other hand, am more uncertain about installing the 6-way, after noting that the two basses have very different pickup s/p configurations. I know I’ll PROBABLY still love the middle solo and all 3 on that I like so much on my D-Roc (pretty certain on the middle solo, after my experiment with swapping the bridge and middle on the 3x switch), but there’s that nagging voice which says that I really don’t know how the different Siri g will effect the “all 3” setting.

Also, JFB hinted at an install video, and I want to see it first.

Well, "balls" has no real meaning. Jumping off with just saying "The D-Roc has more volume" would've side stepped that entirely.
But hey, as I've said before, quite often in fact, to each their own. When I need more volume, I'll just turn a volume knob up :)

Yeaahhhh I'm glad I'm very happy with the DB rotary in my 3x bass. Middle solo is my most common, with all three being next up after that. So far I've avoided the 6-way rotary temptation :D Especially helpful that my main two basses only have two pickups (Prima and the latest Z), and couldn't be happier with that :D
