My PJ has an Aguilar preamp with the hybrid treble control that works in both passive and active. I use the bass in both passive and active. I tend to practice by myself in passive and I would say jam and show time get an equal amount of both. When in active, I tend to slightly boost the lows and either keep the treble flat or roll it off slightly.

On the P, I tend to use the full range of the tone control below the centre detent.

Well riddle me this JP hounds. Can either of you comment on running the JP passive? Or do you always run active?

When I'm playing with the group, I'm set and forget - I usually run active (Glockenklang) and use the bass control for a slight cut (just off the detent).

This bass has a huge sound and the bass cut brings better clarity (I don't 'do' boom) and presence. I do love playing passive when I don't need the 'edge'. Passive sounds more organic and sweet to my ears.

I like to experiment with different strings from time to time, since I can't afford to have 5 or 6 different Dingwalls sitting around, I have to change them up every so often.

Purchased a set of Payson Nickels and got them last night. Strung up the Prima Artist with them and used it for worship this morning.

Awesome warm nickel sound, with round wound punch and sustain! I had to raise my B and E string slightly (had TI flats on prior), but if I had stock Voodoos on, I don't think I would have had to touch anything due to the thoughtful taper Payson adds to the B and E strings.

I'm used to cutting a lot of highs out of my Dingwalls, with the Payson Nickels I found I needed to nudge my highs up a little for some soft upper register solo stuff. These nickles provide a darker sound to my ears, perfect if you find yourself normally cutting your upper mids and highs when running SS strings.

Payson is really dialing it in. The medium light nickels are going great for me on the sixer. Same tone but lighter feel. I'm still rolling back the tone for most playing, but opening it up and going to the blueqube makes for tons of sizzle.

I can't deal with stainless strings, I really like the slick feel of these nickel rounds.

I'm really just starting to appreciate the huge range of tone and texture the AB-1 six string can get. Since I've started using more distortions and the Red Ripper for fuzz, the tone knob has been getting a workout.

Lowest setup yet with the Paysons, with no rattle or buzz.

I'm also running through my first set of Payson's med-light nickels on the old Voodoo. The tension is very, very close to the DW SS strings. I tune down a half-step and like my action on the higher side compaired to most DW players I would think, that being said there was no saddle or truss-rod adjustment needed. The tone is exactly what you would expect from nickels, a bit more "mid-air" with a slightly subdued fundamental and top-end...classic nickel round-wound tone. The fit in terms of winding and string length was perfect which hasn't always been the case with aftermarket strings "designed" for Dingwalls, IME.

My ABII is sporting some of the older model Payson strings (LaBella) that were given to me by a friend. My Super J currently has nickel DR Low Riders on it.

This was an outdoors show as part of a weekly summer community series of shows at a nearby town. We try to do festivals and corporate events (who ever wants us! ).

Smallmouth, I think you'll find the new PFNS-ML's are even better than the Payson/LaBella versions. Better tone and more balanced tension.

Bass Strings Online is now carrying Payson Fanned Bass Strings. Perhaps Jason can offer you an even better shipping rate to Canada than I could based on his volume corporate shipping discount. It never hurts to ask.

I also use my Super PJ in passive mode 99% of the time. I still wouldn't be without the Glock pre, though because I always have that at my disposal for when I do want it.

You aren't being spoon fed. I am simply responding to the posts pertaining to Payson strings and addressing a shipping question Smallmouth had in regard to Canadian shipping.

I don't see Payson strings advertized on Bass Player or similar, shops? no not really, so why here when I don't have to because I am not buying a mag or visiting a store?

I think you're reading too much into this. Our long standing supplier changed their direction on OEM business which made it prohibitive to continue with them. We solicited samples from several manufacturers purposely ignoring who makes what for who as I didn't want that to influence my decision making. We based our decision on which supplier seemed to be the best fit for where we wanted to take things.

I'll wait and see if the Dingwall strings support the tone I'm looking for on the Super P5.

I'll order a few sets of each for the Super J to see if I like the nickels.

Its simple really, I give everyone a fair chance, and that goes for products too.

I tried the strings and found them to have a much stronger tension than OEM and the nickel to be way too dark in comparison.

When I mentioned my findings politely to him, in a private discussion on fb, without him knowing my backgrounds, i.e. that I have worked 4 years in the late 90's with one of London's most skilled luthier, I got a patronizing reply which basically said something alone the lines of me knowing not what I was talking about and that I should have tightened the trussrod when the problem was not the trussrod itself but the strings being too hard to the touch at that point I was scalded and felt I had no more time for him or his bloody strings, and everytime I see a new message about his strings being offered I am like a bull seing red. So yeah now I use that glorious ignore button and I hope I can save myself the indigestion tablet or two.
