I thought I had a pretty good idea of what my B string sounded like. The sweet, phat clarity is there from low levels to punishing and I got to hear my B string like never before. Tonal revelations ensued as I ventured further up the fretboard. I've been using cabinets with dedicated mid-drivers for years and thought I knew what good mid-range sounded like. Once again, I got re-educated on just how sweet, detailed, and musical the mid-range can really be. I'm not endorsed by, or entangled with MAS Sound Works in any way, I'm just astounded and coming close to having too much fun getting my 'inner Dingwall' out. :bassist: If you get a chance to plug one of yours into one of these, you'll hear what I mean. ;)

Interesting. I'll have to take your word for it, as I refuse to even look at another cab serious. (token gratuitous roadhouse pic from sound check Wednesday)

Don't know how much you know about Mike. He is a world class upright guy. Played for a number of years with Patricia Barber.

Check out the groove he lays down on this. Starts at 2:50, or just sit and shake your head through the intro.

I wish I had upright chops like his.

I've enjoyed talking bass & other subjects with Mike via on-line and telephone comms. He's a gem, using his gifts in great ways. I understand the need to fund the occasional Dingwall purchase, but it if you get a chance to hear and feel one of these, you may lose your blinders and un-limber your checkbook. :) In full Yoda voice: You will be amazed.

Sweet bass, that's a classy look! I love the light weight and simplicity of the AB's. Gorgeous fret board!

I'm still into my fEarfuls with just about any amp. I wish the Big E plans were "open source, DIY, like when Greenboy made his debut. I would be out in the shop building the next set of cabs. Half the fun is in the build!

We will be having a GTG out here in the Columbia River Gorge Sept 29th. Bingen Theater, in the afternoon. I'll be bringing my Dingwalls, the fEarfuls, and a few amps and pedals. Bass geeks are welcome to attend. There's a thread in the GTG section. This is a private venue, so, BYOB. These are fun times. Skip the football and come check out some gear!

Interesting how the colour reacts to light. Never had a matt-finished burst before, so I don't know if this is Sheldon's clever colour choices or the nature of the finish.

To the naked eye, it looks almost like a tobacco burst in my office, a very close colour match for my tobacco burst PRS. In direct sunlight there's a lot of red showing, and an orange thing happening in the shade.

I don't see the effect as strongly in these cel phone photos. Regardless, it should look great under stage lighting.

I recently purchased(and traded) for a brand new Dingwall ABZ5. I love playing this bass. The Fanned frets are easy to adjust to and feel quite natural. My ABZ has the Glockenklang preamp with 5 knobs, it's the Whale Pool blue one if you schroll down this link ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]).

My problem is that I'm not sure exactly what each knob specifically does and I can't seem to find any literature anywhere(the one that came with a detailed a 4 knob overview). I've googled it and looked at the Dingwall site but there are no detailed overviews of it that I can find.

Can anyone help me out with either a link or just any basic knowledge pertaining to this? I do have a basic idea and know how the pick selecter knob works. I would just like to know the detailed specs of these 5 knobs.

If you have an ABZ5 then you should only have 3 knobs, Volume / Tone and Pickup rotary selector which does as following:

position one closer to the pickups is the neck pickup on its own, position 2 it's both pickups in series, position 3 it's both pickups in parallel and position 4 it's the bridge pickup on its own.

Did you see the link? It clearly states that it is an ABZ. The guy is a reputable Dingwall dealer. In the picture you can see the 5 knobs. My ABZ has a push/pull knob for Active or Passive.

Mine too. I'd love to know the specifics and all. An official overview of the Glockenklang preamp and knobs specs would be nice. It's officially on my Christmas wish list!!!

Welcome Waldo! That's a beauty, I love the whalepool color.

I'd email the Dingwall shop with the serial number and see what they did with the electronics. You might try posting on the Dingwall forum as well.

Could the Glock pre be an aftermarket mod done by a previous owner, or is it a new bass? Usually we see the two band Glockenlang in the higher end models like the AB-2 and the Super series.

My Super P/J has the Glock pre but only two bands on the tone controls. The four position rotary is the central feature, running as GW describes. The volume knob is a push/pull that turns the preamp on. When the pre is engaged, the eq knobs have a wide range of boost and cut. When the pre amp is turned off, the treble knob acts as a passive tone control and the bass knob does not function. It's a wonderful preamp, and provides a huge range. On the Super P/J, the controls front to back are: volume push/pull switch, rotary pickup selection, bass boost cut (in active mode) nothing in passive, treble boost cut (active) and passive tone cutting.

The passive sound on the Dingwalls is super sweet, I rarely use the preamps on mine.

Please post some pictures when you get a chance.

Thanks for chiming in Sheldon. I'm really loving this bass! As this thread clearly demonstrates you do fantastic work!!! I kind of guessed that these were the functions but I've been wrong before many many times!

I've been able to dial in some fantastic tones just playing at home. I can't wait to dial it in more at the Jam room.

Yes, I saw it. It is a beautiful bass and think you should post more pictures of it! :)

I think the active electronics and especially the 3-band EQ is a relatively new option on the ABZ's.

Sorry I was not aware of the 2 and 3 bands active ABZ until now, it's obviously a new option as Sheldon said that was introduced as from 2013, up to that time ABZ's were only passive as I described them.

Very cool that you have that option.

Waldo, if you pull up on your volume, you'll activate the passive option. You'll notice that even in passive mode the treble cut still works. It's like having two basses in one.

Yes it is like having 2 high quality and versatile basses in one!

Should I do like Singlemalt stated and email my serial number to your contact info on the Dingwall site to get the specifics of the Glockenklang preamp and the five knobs? I'm curious about the +/- levels of the bass, mid and treble knobs and the actual range they cover.
