I’ve got a buddy I could lend a bass to for a weekend and get it back with dead strings.

Yep. I lent my dad a bass to play at one church service and it came back that afternoon with totally dead strings.

Needless to say I don't loan him my Dingwall...

any of you guys use Payson Nickels? how long do they stay moderately zingy? I saw a very nice comparison vid someone made of most of they're string offerings, and I feel like over all I dug the sound of the nickels more than the steels.

They last a comparatively long time. I like a string with some zing and they have been sounding good to me longer than the Dingwall sets...

I now have a disclaimer when this situation arises. Haha. Kill the strings. Replace the strings.

GHS Fast fret and using denatured alcohol helps to give my strings some more life

They last a comparatively long time. I like a string with some zing and they have been sounding good to me longer than the Dingwall sets...

Awesome, ordered a set yesterday. We'll see how they liven the AB2 up. I'd really like to take it to get a pro set up, but my current weekly schedule would just make that a big hassle. So far I've just adjusted pickup height and action, it plays and sounds great, but is notably dead in timbre compared to my Spector and Yamaha. I know that's kind of the nature of the beast seeing as both those basses have hotter preamps and pickups, but the old strings aren't helping.

I'm honestly kind of dreading the string change because of the Hipshot Xtender, last time I changed strings on a drop tune key I had no idea how to do it correctly and it would drop the E to a C# rather than a D. Its no biggie, I honestly have no need to drop tune the B but it would irk me knowing that its set up wrong haha.

Nothing to it. Just takes a few 'trial & error' flips of the lever. With the Xtender disengaged, the it will tune to E like normal. Flip the lever and see what it tunes to. If it's not right, disengage it and adjust the fine tuning screw. Engage and check tuning again. Lather, rinse, repeat until you get the desired tuning with the lever engaged.

If your detuner is dropping past D to C# you need to "tighten" the grub screw. This is a process, even on broken in strings. Get your E in tune first, drop it, note where the note is that you want (sharp or flat) and raise the lever back to E. If your drop note is sharp, loosen the grub screw slightly, and drop the lever to check the new tuning. Repeat until the standard note is in tune and the drop note is in tune.

…really like them too, very even across the strings, they’re easy on the fingers, and also seem to keep most of their (warm) tone for quite a while.

Very nice contrast! Try some Payson Black Daggers to extend that contrast!

I've had 'em on my ABZ5 for a while now.

Like 'em.

Less fret noise -- especially useful in quieter worship songs.

Stickin' with Payson Nickel Steels - medium light on the D-Bird. That Bird sizzles with more string zing!

I still am overwhelmed by how good this looks after the refinish, and how much I wish the colored bevel had stayed on the D-Roc Standard.
