Just last night, I put a brand new set of Payson nickel rounds on my AB-1 four string. .090, .070, .050, and .035. Tuned E-G. I think I’ve hit my perfect set.

These are light and flexible, but still stiff enough to have a great response.

I’ve also used DR pure blues .040 VW. I was going to try the Hellborgs, but the windings fell just short of the nut. Most DR sets I’ve tried on the four strings, Pure blues, Lowriders, just make it with the E string, but this is not the case with the Hellborgs.

Hellborgs do make a nice set for the Super.

I feel like I overshot the mark on how light and low tension I could go, trying sets in the .080-.030 range. At that point just about any touch would fret, and muting became a real issue. A little more tension is needed.

The Payson flats are great on the Dbird. TI jazz flats .040 on the Super.

I’ve been playing just the two with flats the last month and a sizzling new set of rounds on the AB is super fun.

Thanks to Payson for helping me put together these sets. This new set I’d spot on what I’ve been hunting!

Got my NG3 worked on!
It feels like a custom instrument now!
I applied block Neck Illusions stickers, and then Soopastah tech dude Mo Mina did:

• 6-position select (BM series, BM parallel, Mid, BN series, BN parallel, Neck)
• Series/parallel switches for each pickup
• passive tone (stacked under the volume control)
• Active/passive moved to a pull on the High Mid control

I can get close-enough Precision, MM, Jazz, and Wal sounds, and a lot more!

I want a custom with wenge... I like wenge feel and sound more than maple. Its a bit brighter and it looks better as well.

I always thought maple sounded brighter. At least on the instruments I've played.

I'll add another+1 for John Fox. I was unhappy with communication from another vendor and cancelled my order to grab a build slot from JFB.

We shot a few emails back and forth and at one point he mentioned he could give me better info when he gets back from vacation! I didn't realize he was emailing me poolside with his family.

I told him to just wait until he's back in the shop. No rush. He's been great.

John is seemingly ALWAYS ready to talk to customers, and will happily meander through a variety of topics, as the conversation flows. And he clearly listens and pays attention to what is said by someone he’s talking to, which too few people in any situation seem to do, these days.

Wenge is my all time favorite neck wood. The Dingwall wenge necks are phenomenal.

Yes, it’s a very odd problem to have; feeling guilty that your shop guy is replying to you from a function in Vegas. Having to put your foot down and say there’s no need to check with Dingwall about a different pick guard until he returns home. Weird.

Ok so need some help, I had a set of pups put in my Droc and I’m not digging these pups and want to put the originals back in. But I’m gonna need a an actual pic of the rotary switch so I can see how the wiring is. An actual pic of the rotary is what I need basically any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’ll pile on with the JFB love-fest. He’s extraordinary attentive and literally leaves no stone unturned. He understands and respects the time and money commitment a custom Dingwall requires and makes keeps the the customer informed about all aspects of the transaction. I’m a pretty informed customer and not a difficult client at all, but he’s gone above and beyond my expectations. Can’t recommend him enough.

I don't need one now, but I'd like to have one on hand.

I found a Dingwall parts site that looked like a knock off site. I think that's been discussed too. Haha

For 1/2 a step just use the standard strings the only difference is they are very, very slightly less tension. I actually prefer Dingwall strings tuned down 1/2 a step I wish I could find a set which would give me the same feel at standard tuning.

I put a custom set of Kalliums on a older combustions and at first I didn’t like them. They came with another bass I had bought figured I’d finally give them a try.
I ended up tuning them down to Eb and that is when I found their sweet spot.

I have a local store that sells that kind of stuff called B and E electronics. It’s a fun store to go shopping in. I’ve been tempted to try making a few pedals thanks to that place.

Kev, it does depend which switch you have. Can you post a photo?
