But yeah, having a good dealer help you out is something great. The local dealer here just happened to have pretty much exactly the bass I wanted on order, I simply tweaked it from a tobacco burst finish to a natural finish, and was able to get a whole bunch of answers to my questions real fast. Cut down the delivery time from 18-20 months to like, 4. Definitely worth going through good people to get what you want, plus if there were any warranty issues I'd just go straight back to them with it.

About that used ABZ that I missed out on, again...

It felt really crappy to let it go, I wanted to grab it but after talking to my SO about it, I thought I would wait a little bit and really consider it. Obviously, by the time I reached out to the seller there was a guy who asked about it first - hasn't made his mind up yet though - so the seller pushed him for an answer and that guy took it.

That is that.
But!

There are some options that I got a green light on, so not all hope is lost.

There is an Afterburner 1, Afterburner 2 and a DROC Custom 4 for sale that I am considering, as well as a Super J 5.

Afterburner 1 is alder with a maple/maple neck, Afterburner 2 is walnut with a maple/wenge and the DROC is mahogny with wenge/wenge.

The afterburners don't really do it for me that much, look wise. Yes they are beautiful but not to my taste. The DROC looks killer though, in ducati white, 24 frets with wenge/wenge neck and fingerboard.

Out of these, the super J looks stunning (you can see it on dingwalls website, its the trans white one with black block inlays) but its also the most expensive.

I also asked one place if they have any custom DROC 5s on the way, so gonna wait on a word from them.

Any thoughts on this, club?

I'm leaning the most towards the custom DROC 4 but at the same time, in that price range, there is a lot more options than just Dingwall... Say, I could order a hand made Le Fay etc and get it in just a few months.

Does anyone have a black Limba bodied Dingwall? I’m considering that along with either the wenge or roasted ash neck.
I already saw the abII and z3 on the Dingwall fb page but I’m looking for more examples.

I'm a bit confused, D-Roc's don't have 24 frets, or are you talking about an AB there?

If you don't like the AB looks then forget about em and if you're looking at a D-Roc 5 just get a standard and save yourself a few grand.
There is very little difference other than the price on the 5s and I say that as a Custom & Standard D-Roc owner.

You are correct.
I do not know where I got that idea from.

I want a custom with wenge... I like wenge feel and sound more than maple. Its a bit brighter and it looks better as well.

Ah I see, I have 2 Dingwalls with wenge necks an AB and a Super P. While I do love the look and feel I don't hear any significant difference in the sound. I personally wouldn't pay the $3k more to get a custom with wenge over the standard.

I own one of the Z3's in Black Limba, and the only other example I have seen is the D-Roc from Namm. Loving mine for the record!

A finished one, not so much, but another user pointed out to me that, in the pic I posted where I spotted my Z3-to-be, that his was the one in the far left, and that it is black limba.

Got in touch with Dingwall techs and they confirmed I should be able to steam my minor dent out. I’m probably going to have a luthier do it though as I don’t trust myself to not make it worse lol.

Couple of questions:

1) Going to get the afterburner 4 setup in e flat standard. Any recommendations on string brands/gauge for that tuning?

2) Anyone have a trusted luthier or luthier recommendations for Chicago?

I'll add another+1 for John Fox. I was unhappy with communication from another vendor and cancelled my order to grab a build slot from JFB.

We shot a few emails back and forth and at one point he mentioned he could give me better info when he gets back from vacation! I didn't realize he was emailing me poolside with his family.

I told him to just wait until he's back in the shop. No rush. He's been great.

As far as strings go, it’s hard to go wrong with either Dingwall or Payson strings seeing as how both are specifically designed for multi scales. If you’re dead set on a certain brand, make sure they fit. Multi-scale scale lengths, especially a 5 string are too long for traditional long scale bass strings.

I went the same route to end up placing my order with JFB. With him, there’s no mystery and no stone left unturned.

I’ll bet a pumpkin spice latte that I can guess which Dingwall dealer didn’t communicate well.

For 1/2 a step just use the standard strings the only difference is they are very, very slightly less tension. I actually prefer Dingwall strings tuned down 1/2 a step I wish I could find a set which would give me the same feel at standard tuning.
