Initial thoughts:
I’ve only had time for a little playing, since I have to go pick up my son from school, but the feel and sound of it are just ludicrously good. The neck on a Z, I have been told, is slim. I thought my 6-string NG3 is slim, but what I was told is accurate, and the Z is noticeably slimmer feeling.
I remember when I first heard of Dingwall. It was a five-string bass shootout in Bass Player mag, and I distinctly remember the magazine saying that the “B-string speaks like the voice of God.” I knew my NG3 had a great B string. But the Z very literally sent a shiver down my spine, the first time I played it. And it keeps having that effect!
I indulged in one of my favorite shifts in how I play a four-string part on a six, the intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls, playing that high riff starting on the C instead of the G string, and that bit was a lot like playing it on the NG3. But the open E hits in there had an uncannily bell-tolling quality to them that was startlingly suited to that song.
It took a long time to receive, and it was a lot of money put towards it, but I can honestly say that I am extremely satisfied with my first custom Dingwall.

Yes - SJ5 "precision tone in a jazz bass body" build being defined (don't ask me about finish options...). Basically I wanted to add a "shorter" scale Dingwall, with vintagey/punchy/faster decay vibes, but also a bit more versatility than a "single split P bass. Looks like I will try a P-Tone plus SFII combination - but wanted to see how you ranked FDVs on your P-tastic scale.

When it comes to six strings I’d be pretty wild to get your 2 together with the 2 colourful ones of mine!!!
My next one is going to be much darker. If you recall, during the wait I arranged for an F#0 NG3 6 from Jason at FretNation, and that one will be here soon as well. It is Black Forest Green.
After that, I’m thinking about putting down a deposit on a fretless ABZ 6. That one is going to be interesting, if my vision for it pans out, and I think you’d like what I am thinking of for that, as well.
I’d say the most vintagey combo would be the P tone and SF2 for sure. can you get an actual P in a J still or did they make soap bars the only option on a J now? Either way, do you have a preference? Soap bar for versatility?
As for FD3 vs SF2 vs FDV when paired with a P
As discussed, I lean to the FD3s for that clean, articulate attack. Modern aggressive P attack
going retro?!! I’d throw in an SF2 anyway as they are nice fat and smooth.
FDV…. FDV…. Hmmmm. FDV. They have “the voice”. I’m very happy with them in my fretless and don’t think I’d want something else in it at all. They really open the notes up. To me they sit right between a P and an FD3 but they don’t really do either one. I feel it would be my least likely pick up to pair with a P due to the fact I don’t think I’d desire the enhancement it would offer the P tone. A P sounds killer all on its own and so to add versatility I think the previously mentioned options create a more dynamic structure. I think the FDV would blend more than “style” if that makes sense.
Circling back, my main Z I had spec with FDVs and I spec’d FD3s in my fretless. I honestly didn’t fully know what I was gonna get with the fretless. New territory.
I hadn’t really explored the differences of the FD3s and FDVs in too much detail as I just always thought both were awesome and I didn’t really have a project over the last couple of years to refine my preferences in(for the project at least). I loved how both basses sounded but couldn’t really dial in my main bass the way I wanted I wanted tighter tone. I also felt the fretless was a bit too clean and tight. Thru this I realized I really do love dual humbuckers with some good low mid push and a really clean delivery. I’m waiting on the day we get some dingwall DCs
Anyways, pick up swaparoo between the 2 basses and I definitely landed way closer to where I want to be.
I am also very tempted to pull the DGTC out and put a glocklang in the fretless. I put it in my Spector fretless and it sings beautifully (with EMG DCs)
I think I was envisioning ultimate mid control when I spec’d it with the FD3s and DGTC but I ended up with something far more precisely dialed in than required. I’m finding, IMO, the fretless dingwall needs to open up a bit and the FDVs really helped with that…. Whew. Ok. Sorry. Long circle of a story.
TL;DR… FDVs are more open and vocal then the FD3s.
they actually remind me in a way of the Mesa Subway 15s. Man those speaker Speak! Best used at high volume so you have a chance to actually push them lows out of them. I’ve had to humbly reduce my speaker load to keep the peace and get the low end out at lower volumes. .. oops wondered off topic again.
This is on its way to me right now.

That‘s an absolutely stunning piece of ash. I’m a little envious, and I’m not even a Jazz kind of guy.
Picked up a second-hand MINT NG-3 (plastic still on pickups and guard, looks like it is brand-new out of box for the first time, only used gently in the studio) this Sunday - plays like a dream and a great companion to my 2016 Combustion

Tangential related; I took an Ampeg PF-50t head, Genzler 15 bass array cab up to my local/little GC because they have an Orange AD200B and I am thinking that I may need a more powerful head than I gave soonish. I never trade stuff at GC but I am okay taking a little beating and added a few bucks for the Orange this time. The guys were nice enough but they didn’t really know much about gear and had a hard time placing a value on my stuff so they had to take pics and ask the LA store what to do. I am hoping to get decent news tomorrow and have a new amp to run my 2 Dingwalls through
