I used to rock a '63 Series II back in the day. I actually re-visited 'bird territory with a 'ThunderJag' a few years ago, but it's just not the vibe I need for praise music. :cool:

I recently acquired NG3 and I have 2 questions:
1. What are the tonal and dynamic differences between FD3 and FD3-N pickups? I know the -N is neodymium but that doesn't tell me much. I saw the Dingwall video comparing pickups but FD3-N wasnt part of it. I somehow lack low mids with FD3-N, otherwise I feel the voicing is fine.
2. Is it possible to rewire 3x pickup, 4 position switch to have bridge and middle pickups run in parallel instead series or just have the middle pickup soloed? I opened the electronics cavity, saw a wild forest of wires and a PCB on the switch and gave up.

You could just order a D-Roc switch and swap it in. It has B+M parallel and middle solo built in.

You can get a custom 6-way switch, I got mine from FretNation, altering the standard setup to replace bridge solo with middle solo. Figure out what pickup selections YOU want, and contact them to see if that configuration is something they can do.

I'm chasing this down as well. It's like the FBI could identify me using the roundwounds and my fingerprints. :roflmao:

On the NG-2, I'm most partial to position 3, which is Bridge/Neck in Series. I don't think the NG-3 has this position. But I still think I'd like the emphasis to be more in the lower-midband than where it is in the upper-midband.

It was mentioned on the Dingwall Facebook group that it might be the Neodymium magnets are too hot for my liking.

Eventually I'll figure out if I need to swap out the FD3-Ns for Super Fatty IIs, or swap out the preamp for Audere or John East.

No matter what, I still LOVE this bass in every other way! It will be worth it to tweak it to my personal taste.

For reference purposes, here is what the stock NG-2 has wired and what the stock NG-3 has wired. In the NG-2 to NG-3 conversion, the there is no "neck" like the NG-3, because there is no pickup in that position. So, "neck" on the NG-2 is "middle" on the NG-3.

Here's how the NG-2 is wired:
  1. Bridge
  2. Bridge/Neck in Parallel
  3. Bridge/Neck in Series (Not in the NG-3 switch)
  4. Neck
Pickups are in the bottom two positions. Neck is empty.

And how the NG-3 is supposed to be wired:

1(Bridge)- Motown fender tone. (Same as position 1 above)
2(Bridge/Middle in Parallel)- Fender J tone (Same as position 2 above)
3(Middle)- Stingray MM tone (Same as position 4 above)
4(Bridge/Middle in Parallel + Neck in Series)- Dingwall tone (Unique to NG-3)

I've got the 6-way switch mentioned above, but I haven't installed the NG-3 upgrade OR the switch, yet. I thought I'd get real familiar with the NG-2 first, then start experimenting.

nice. I think it would look killer on white or black.
I believe mine to be on the block pretty quick. It’s just not the desired effect for me.

sounds like you need a 6 way from Mo at Nordstrand. That and perhaps to utilize the DGTC.

If you’re looking for that serious Low mid push like active EMG DCs have then your SOL. these are a different pup. The SF2s enhance the bottom end and smooth the tone but no dingwall pups push the low mids the same way as DC humbuckers.

you can get an older AB and do something like this

The FD3-N is the production model pick up installed in the Combustions. It has a hotter output than the FD3.
The FD3 is the flagship pick up of Canadian made basses. It is more articulate then the FD3-N

That said, it’s been basically replaced as the flagship by the FDV
