The FD34n pick ups that come on the combustions are I believe the hottest Output pickups from dingwall. They really are fantastic. One way to minimize the clank is to lower those pick ups. You will lose a bit of output doing this but you will find significant differences in sound/output with the range of height adjust. My main player that gets the most time(mainly thru headphones right now) I actually have the pick ups quite low. It took some exploration to find that happy spot.

With that,

if you get some Canadian pick ups you’ll find the FD3 to be similar to the production ones but a little less output and a more refined articulate tone. Quite ballsy and clear. Can really crunch nice too.

I think the P tone is kind of self explanatory. It’s a great sounding pick up with more mids up front as you’d expect and can be used to add some wool or grit to your sound but softens up nicely with the tone rolled back.

The SF2s. I just recently got to try an SF2 for the first time. I swapped out my FD3s in my SJ for a P tone and SF2.
This added more warmth, and a bit of beef in the low end. The sound of the instrument smoothed out. It’s sounds big but not as “edgy” as it used to with the FD3s


I’d also recommend some Payson nickes. They don’t bite as hard as SS for example.

Hi Nate - I thought these previous comments from you could be useful re:the question above - and that also gives me an opportunity to ask you - are you happy with the P-Tone and SFII combination on you SJ (do they work well together)?

I have never seen a single pickup AB, NG, Combustion, Z or Prima. Anything other than the SuperP, for that matter. That would be interesting!

For reference purposes, here is what the stock NG-2 has wired and what the stock NG-3 has wired. In the NG-2 to NG-3 conversion, the there is no "neck" like the NG-3, because there is no pickup in that position. So, "neck" on the NG-2 is "middle" on the NG-3.

Here's how the NG-2 is wired:

1. Bridge
2. Bridge/Neck in Parallel
3. Bridge/Neck in Series (Not in the NG-3 switch)
4. Neck

Pickups are in the bottom two positions. Neck is empty.

And how the NG-3 is supposed to be wired:

1(Bridge)- Motown fender tone. (Same as position 1 above)
2(Bridge/Middle in Parallel)- Fender J tone (Same as position 2 above)
3(Middle)- Stingray MM tone (Same as position 4 above)
4(Bridge/Middle in Parallel + Neck in Series)- Dingwall tone (Unique to NG-3)

I've got the 6-way switch mentioned above, but I haven't installed the NG-3 upgrade OR the switch, yet. I thought I'd get real familiar with the NG-2 first, then start experimenting.

Great, thank you. This is about what I was hoping for! I'm sure I may miss some of this hifi, bite and quickness on my "future" SJ5 but that P-tastic tone and phat smooth bottom end is exactly the point - I have the C5 and ABZ for that (no FD3 though, only FD3ns and FDVs - but call me tempted to test one on the C5... Which one would you start with, Middle? Neck?).

Do you have any idea if the middle pickup is different than neck or bridge pickup or they're just reusing neck or bridge pickups just wiring them differently?

There are only 2 versions of the same pickup (neck and bridge), they just have opposite polarities. I believe that on their 3-pickup basses they add a Neck pickup and put the Bridge pickup in the middle position (to alternate magnetic poles since the pickups are very close to each other). So you end up with:

Neck pickups in Neck and Bridge positions
Bridge pickup in Middle position

I.e. you need to get an additional neck pickup (or possibly a bridge pickup and do it the other way around).

Hope that makes sense.

TL;DR

I ended up with another Combustion. first six string and really don’t see this one going anywhere. It was bought with purpose and has a bit of a story. It holds a title of “Our bass” between myself and someone Awesome. I was fortunate to play it in the past before it found a home(it’s dated somewhere in this thread I think).

This beauty has a perfect neck, set up and a bonus 6 way switch. I may add toggles and possibly a custom PG. DEtuner already ordered.
Oh and some serious magic mojo from its previous owner. without further adieu:

I’m with some of the others in saying I think white pearl would be sexy AF on that purple. It would look ultra classy! I’m also not much for of a fan of tort on solid colors (or any finishes for that matter). Tort looks best with “boomer burst” finishes.

However, it seems like I've seen this bass before but I can't put my finger on it. This is something I would have bought in a heartbeat if it had speedo's, and I swear I looked at it before and passed on it for that reason but he says it's brand new so I'm not sure. It could have been a different one. But he has zero feedback and no posts here. Also says it's 36" scale which is strange...

White would be alright, I agree classy. Not at all what I’m going for though.
I must admit, since they’ve refined the fit and finish on the standard pickguard this one has grown on me a lot.

Just the subtle details of the edge finish on those stripes made a huge improvement IMO. That and I like the black vs carbon fibre

still may be a custom PG in the future but it will have dark leanings.

if anyone is interested in the 6 string 3x Tort PG I have LMK. I’ll list it FS when I get around to it if not.

Well, it arrived in town on Sunday evening, so it has been in the local area for a couple days already. Allowing for the 20 degrees difference between the outside air and my house, I’m going to give this a few hours. Then I can post a pic of my Dingwall family.
