Have you gigged all of them? If you were only playing Saturdays and trying to gig them all you could only use each bass 2 nights a year! You have far too many Dingwalls!

So what's the story with the bodyless neck?

It's the neck of the Brazil (formerly known as Snotburst). It has the ramp and this feature does not allow digging in. So, essentially, I ordered another Dingwall: a fretless neck to go with the body (and you see it) and another body to go with this fretted neck (you will see it)

As far as gigging goes, I rehearse with different groups and record as well (apart from gigging) so all my basses get a workout

New to the site here (actually this is my second post) and also a Dingwall owner. Once I get a working digital camera I'll post my pic. However, the Z2 you see as the pic on Sheldon Dingwall's website is indeed my Z2. http://www.dingwallguitars.com/html/products.html

It took a year to make, because Sheldon was in the process of just launching the Afterburner series, coupled with the fact he never found a wood finish he liked (since I picked Whale Pool Blue for the color). Anyway, when he was done he called me before delivery and asked if he could take pictures and show them. I said sure thing, in fact I saw it on the website before I even got the thing!

I'll try and borrow a friends camera and get some pics posted.

With the two pickups so close together, do you actually get a different tone from each? Or are they wired up together as a single humbucker?

Even though the 2 coils are "close" together you do get 4 distinct tonal possibilities. The two pickups are are connected to the 4 position rotary switch that allows the following choices: bridge pickup, neck pickup, both in parallel, both in series (I suppose it still has the original 4 pos switch on; with the new 4pos one gets: bridge, both in parallel, both in series, neck pickup).

PS I forgot to mention that I am not Sheldon
PS 2 ever since I acquired my first Z2, my SR5 has been sitting in its case and got sold couple of moths ago

Aye, the tone is beyond compare. The range and the response (due to the 18v) are also unmatched.

I finally got to the point where, I'm not affraid to take it to practice

Well folks, it comes down to this - I'm going to have to turn in my number. I'm letting go of my Super J. Even though it's a well built, lightweight, beautiful instrument, it just doesn't quite have the tone that I'm going for. Sheldon has been exceedingly cool dealing with me over the last year, and I'm saddened to be leaving this tiny little family of Dingwall owners.

I'm reversing all the mods I made on my instrument, and putting it back to spec (I won't be able to remove the battle scars it has from hundreds of gigs, but oh well - it's on it's way to being a reliced SJ4, and I'm sure somebody will be able to appreciate that.). Once I get it all back together, I'll be popping it up on eBay (unless somebody has a fretless Bongo they'd like to trade... ), so hopefully somebody will continute to enjoy this wonderful bass.

Perhaps I'll get another Dingwall in the future - one that's more suited to my particular needs. As it is, I have gained a lot from owning a Dingwall - I'm hooked on the fanned scale concept. So much so, that I now fan out my bridges much as possible on my fretless instruments (33.5"-35" on my Ovation - yow!). Maybe if Sheldon makes a Super P someday...
