I'm late to the party with this one, (forgive me I had not been on TB for years) I've owned it from new for a year already, this one was a special order, meaning the body and neck wood, choice of fretboard wood and finally one feature that makes it unique is that is the only one made so far with just 2 pickups instead of the standard 3. I had to literally argue with the factory, because I was told the cnc process cuts 3 pickup slots and so no pal, we can't make you one with 2 pickups, I insisted that the cnc process is after all operated by software and such can and should be altered. Well after a few more emails back and forth, they agreed. I am not a fan of those 3 pickups so close to each other and I reallly (to be very honest) don't care for the variety of sounds they give you, I am old skool and I couldn't give a flip-flop

The choice of body colour/finish really works well with the fingerboard and pickguard wood pattern. very nice and congratulations!

Sorry to rain on the parade but it’s not the only one with 2 pickups as mine was made in 2020/21 . Yours is certainly the only one with two pickups in that configuration though.

I play my Combustion in a cover band and we play a little bit of everything. The Combustion covers it all with ease. The vast majority of us in this forum don't play in Periphery. Dingwalls do it all.

I'm surprised they gave you a hard time on the 2 pickups, from my talks with John Fox it seemed like they were every open to doing a D-Roc with fewer pickups. There was no back and forth in my case and the bonus of it being a few $$ cheaper with one less pickup was nice.

I would call mine a Z2 configuration rather than the combustion haha. in reality it has a P-tone in the 'neck' position and that's the only setting I ever use so it's essentially just a fancy P-bass.
Now If I could convince them to build a D-Roc with a single split P pickup in it that would be magic.... that has been asked a few times and met with a straight no sadly.

I haven't played an NG so I couldn't really compare, but I would think either would be fine.

Completely different from the norm which is why I like it. I’ve had some people telling me it won’t work for this genre but it’s a bass at the end of the day. If a jazz can work in metal, why can’t a Dingwall in rock, indie, pop ?

Those same people will tell you "the tone is in the fingers", go figure...
I don't think you can't be more versatile than a multi-pickup, active / passive bass.
Also, everyone's favourite example of not-metal Dingwall player : Lee Sklar.

that’s very true.
im a guitarist by trade but have played bass for 20odd years and recently took a real interest and enjoyment in the instrument and joined a few bands playing bass. I have an American 2005 fender p bass but want a new modern sounding / feel but with the punch and clarity of notes and the NG3 hits the mark for me

If you can get the chance I’d recommend trying out a combustion with a PF fingerboard and a NG In a store. That’s probably the best way to discern which one is more your style. There is a significant difference in the preamps but ultimately both models will work in pretty
Much any application.

There's a little more to it - the combustion is ash, the NG is Alder. Me, I prefer Alder so i went with the NG's. IMO - the only thing that really puts the NG in "metal" territory is the DGTC. Heck, ive used a stock NG for reggae gigs and it worked just fine. Throw a Nordstrand 3 band in you've got a killer versatile instrument. Or in my case i used a Nordy 2B so i could have a passive tone and not drill any extra holes.

Both the combustions and NG's are excellent mod platforms in this case.

I play no metal. All it took was a quick perusal of some tunes from 'The Immediate Family' and I knew Dingwall was not relegated to metal. I know Lee plays an LSS (vs an NG3), but you don't HAVE to crank the darkglass tone to 11 just because it has one.

Well damn, I'm not the biggest fan of the D-Roc silhouette, but this one's changing my mind. Glad they accommodated your request for 2x pickups. I believe there's another 2x D-Roc out there but with the Z2/NG-2 arrangement.

Thanks for posting this, I just stopped by to play it. This was my first chance to play a Canadian Dingwall and wow, does this thing blow every other bass I’ve played out of the water! Someone’s going to be very happy when they buy this guy.

Dingwall was around at least 15 years before the Modern Intense Heavy Rock scene (or whatever it’s called) latched onto it. Google Lee Sklar - he plays a Dingwall in big arenas, theaters, and even small clubs playing everything but
Extreme Rock styles.
