I don’t think I do have any audio at this time.
I want more bite is my reason for putting the FD3 back in. The SF2 is too smooth for me. I don’t think you’d find it to be too much in the bridge. It really warms and Darren’s the bridge nicely.. if you like a smoother rounder tone.
I seem to be diving deeper and deeper towards more aggression. The SF2 counters that.

the SF2 vs The P tone in the bridge: the Ptone will open the sound up more in the mids where as the SF2 will give that solid thicker fundamental backing.


P tone vs P:
The P tone is a P pick up in a soap bar style shell. I have an SJ which only has the soapbar routing.
The P is the actual split dual shell P pick up.

I’ve had a couple Supers with SF pickups at the bridge and split P at the neck. Very nice combination. I would wire the SF to series, making the bridge both louder and more P like. You could add a switch if you wanted for both series and parallel.

This makes the bridge pup more aggressive and fun. You’ll still need to boost the volume with bridge solo, but all the snarl and burpy attack is there for your Jacoesque amusement.

The split P is already fixed as a series pickup.

The selection one notch from bridge solo, both pups in parallel was a favorite for scooped, tight, slap and finger style. Both in series is huge. And the P solo is perfect P.

I think it’s easier to choose now, with the standardized shell shapes and size and routing. Plus there’s all the three pickup combinations.

I wouldn’t mind having a bridge pup in my current Super P, but it’s a very minor quibble. The simplicity and light weight (7.5 lb) more than make up for it.

It's E-C, as I liked the tension that way, and a "low D" works well. It is a "D-tuner," after all.

Completely different from the norm which is why I like it. I’ve had some people telling me it won’t work for this genre but it’s a bass at the end of the day. If a jazz can work in metal, why can’t a Dingwall in rock, indie, pop ?

Pay them no mind. Switch to passive mode, use the bridge & neck pickups in parallel, and you got yourself a J tone. Sure it'll have a bit of a 'Dingwall flavour', but there's nothing wrong with that and I challenge you to find more than 10% of any given audience who would even notice, and even fewer would care. If you need to tame it further, that's what EQs are for, but honestly I don't think you will. My ABZ gets a really smooth J tone by doing what I described, smooth enough to do the job in any case.

The only way your NG ‘might’ be an issue in a function band is if it’s one of the bright green, yellow or orange ones and just sticks out too much. Save from that nobody will care, except that one guy, and it’s always a guy… he’ll be there regardless to tell you what you’re doing wrong

I wish I tried them when I was in a pop/pop rock band or the cover band I gigged with. The NG's or Combustions cover a lot of tonal ground. Plus, these basses do a great P bass tone that I prefer more than an actual P most of the time.

Just FYI that cover band was in the UK and started in maybe 2009/10. I also had Stingray HH at the time but the ABZ (whale pool blue) was my main player for almost every show.

I play my Combustion in a cover band and we play a little bit of everything. The Combustion covers it all with ease. The vast majority of us in this forum don't play in Periphery. Dingwalls do it all.

I had to literally argue with the factory, because I was told the cnc process cuts 3 pickup slots and so no pal, we can't make you one with 2 pickups, I insisted that the cnc process is after all operated by software and such can and should be altered. Well after a few more emails back and forth, they agreed. I am not a fan of those 3 pickups so close to each other and I reallly (to be very honest) don't care for the variety of sounds they give you, I am old skool and I couldn't give a flip-flop

Sorry to rain on the parade but it’s not the only one with 2 pickups as mine was made in 2020/21 . Yours is certainly the only one with two pickups in that configuration though.

I played my AB's and Combustion in rock cover bands before Dingwall's even caught on in the heavy world. They will work well in any music genre that electric bass is used.
