Dingwall Owners Club

I had added a J pickup in my SP5 that I sold. I first went with a FDV and then swapped it out to a P-Tone. If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably go with a Super Fatty II, just based on how the SF1 sounds on my older SJ5 (P/J). It sounds thicker and fuller than my SP5 did. Then again, the pickup placement wasn't the same (P closer to the neck and J in the 70's position on my SJ5).

a P-Tone in the bridge position, so technically it‘s a Super Double P.
Same here. I’m a total maniac for this atm. Love it for some new tunes we’re doing. Normally I’m a split P guy and rarely used the Bridge p’up but that recently changed.

Anyone got an example of the Super P with single pickup’s tone fusion control? When I decide to get a Super P, I’d like an example, because I’m really torn between just the P pup and the PJ setup.
I put the tone fusion control in my SPJ4 and a P-Tone in the Bridge position and it’s damn close to perfect for a lot of stuff.
Didn’t stop me from scooping a SP4 for those times when that’s all I wanted for simplicity and at 7.5 lbs, it’s a dream to play.
I thought it would be all I ever needed but turned out, I need both.

Still getting used to my D-Bird, but finding that I’m in Position 1 (bridge) almost never, position 2 (bridge and middle) maybe 10% of the time, position 3 (middle) probably 50% of the time, and position 4 (all on) about 40% of the time. I’d like to be able to switch from position three to four on the fly but it’s such a massive volume change when all three pickups come on it makes it difficult.

Very similar experience here...I've kinda landed on #4 (all in) most of the time. It works for a lot of the songs I play on the D-Bird.

The big volume jump is why I got rid of series mode when I re-wired my bass last week.

Series made all of the other options sound small, so it became the de facto standard.

Now that all 3 pickups provide roughly the same volume, I was able to raise the P-Tone back to Dingwall factory height specs - which made it sound much fatter and more dynamic.

Interesting. While I don't have a P-tone in my D-Bird, I might have to try the parallel wiring scenario down-the-road.

I definitely favor the all three on setting on my D Roc. I’ll use middle solo and middle/bridge at times, but the bridge solo may as well not even exist for me.
That was my exact experience with the droc.

On my Afterburner, it's bridge and neck in series 90% of the time. I love it.

Funny thing is, on every bass I’ve had that had a series/parallel switch I inevitably kept it in series mode 90% of the time, only using parallel when I was noodeling around the neck during practice. Unfortunately on the D-Bird you can’t do just the bridge and neck in series, you can do bridge and center in parallel with the neck added in in series, not sure if that sounds anything like the Afterburner though.

I’m pretty handy with wiring and designing bass guitar circuits so one of these days I’ll open up the control cavity and see what it’ll take to get the four position selector to be bridge/middle/neck/all three in series.

Or I might just connect with fretnation and order a 6 way switch wired bridge/middle/neck/bridge and middle/neck and middle/all three in series.

Or I might just do what I did with the three pickup Thunderbird bass that I designed and built in my avatar, install a volume/tone stack for each pickup which would allow infinite blending of each pickup with the others.

After years of interest, I got my first Dingwall last week.
Super P5.

I love it. My question is about strings. It came with DR Blue Steel. I tried some labella golds. They are both good, but I'm not sure if they are great.

I know this is highly personal and subjective, but does you have any favorite strings with your Dingwall? Specifically a passive super P5?
Thanks!

I commented on this recently, but my ranking of the three I’ve tried on my Super J are Payson Nickels, then Dingwall Nickels, and Kalium Hybrids coming in last.

Do you have a 3X selector on your emg dingwall ?
Do the different combinations also "work" ? I mean, tonally ..

I also love humbuckers, but don't you lose versatility ?
I remember on my 5lx euro with DCs, full bridge or full neck or somewhere in between didn't make that much of a difference in the end .. :)
Some of course, but that balance pot definitely didn't allow as much tone-shaping as the dingwall selector.

Oh and yeah that's pretty much the only drawback I could envision from where I sit lol

I have an EMG blend pot installed.
It generally floats around centre.

I’m not really in a position that I need versatility or even want it for that matter.
Versatility is fun but I really only need specific tones. That said, humbly, you have a good idea what I have here and can get versatility from one bass to the next.

I like DR pure blues VW set on the Super, because they are about the lightest set out there. Other super light sets are GHS boomers, .030 and D’Adarrio XL .035. DR strings will just make it on the longscale four string Dingwalls.

Payson reduced core nickels are another favorite, and you can order up sets of individual strings to suit your preferences. The Payson nickel round set he suggested for my light string preferences nailed it. I think it’s a .035 set.

The Dingwall strings are a great choice if you like a .045 G string. I find them to be too stiff for my needs.

I’m hoping that it arrives around the end of the year or January 2024, but I need to ask the shop.
Good luck, brother! My Z3 build is sitting around the 3 year mark and still no word. The dealer still hasn’t been able to get a delivery estimate from the shop either. :/ Just trying to help set expectations on current build times. But maybe you’ve got some extra priority with you being a DW artist. Maybe it’ll be quicker for ya. :)

But you had no curiosity to try the selector ?
Or try the 2 DCs in series ? :)

Regarding versatility yeah I wasn't criticizing, more like thinking out loud about why maybe dingwall wouldn't want humbuckers per default - for those who cannot afford a whole bass collection and need a single instrument which can do it all (or at least as much as possible).

Well, mine is a four-string, but I use Paysons. I also have them on my SJ-5.

"Territory" being the operative term when it comes to Jazz bass sounds. My Super J with 3X FDVs does a great job of various P and MM sounds, but none of the settings sound at all like any of my Jazz basses. As @IvanBassist pointed out it's much more of a Spector'ish sound than an actual Jazz sound. Still a killer and very usable sound, but I do always laugh a little when I play my Super J and realize it can nail so many sounds but can't manage a passable Jazz facsimile.

Agreed. As much as I want my Dingwalls (AB1, NG3) to sound like jazz basses, neither match the sound of my 2010 Marcus Miller Signature Fender Jazz, which remains as my go to bass if I want to imitate the Marcus Miller slap tone.

I never read any criticism and didn’t mean to sound as thou I did. I’m just trying keep things simple over here.

I did try the pick up selector originally and with that I’m not 100% sure but I was afraid running in series was dangerous for the active pick ups. I don’t actually know the truth to this but It did seem too much. I should ask EMG.

Either way, I do have a soft spot for the EMGs ran at Center detent or just slightly off centre.

Boasting about the collection wasn’t my intent. If anything I guess I was representing a downfall of my lack of determination in making a one bass the Swiss Army knife it could be.

If I was in a situation of playing covers or something I’d hope to explore more tones but im just trying to keep up playing the band originals and find tone sculpting has become secondary in my limited practice time. Im envious of the folks here that have refined their sounds meticulously and then can A/V That stuff for presentation.
