It does not. Specs aren’t in any way final until it is about to go into the build process, and Dingwall will contact your dealer to confirm final specs before they start work. A good dealer will immediately contact you to finalize those specs, and until then, you can change to any model you want (caveat, I think Prima Artists are done via direct contact between the customer and Dingwall, but I haven’t looked into and confirmed all of that, because I’m not stupidly rich).

About the P-Bass tone ...

I do have a P-Type pick-up in my Z3 and it sounds great and very much like a P-Bass with a modern touch.

Now ... I have that Super-J 5 with three pick-ups. If I had the neck pick-up exchanged for a P-type pick-up ... would that also give me that P-Bass sound ... like a Super-P? Or are the pick-ups at different locations?

I don't have the money for a Super-P5. But a pick-up would be doable.

You’ll see the series/parallel switch options on the Dingwall options list if you order a custom build. Six way switches are available for the three pickup models….it can get to be way too many choices. At least for me, YMMV.

FWIW, the P pickup in a Super is a series pickup. With P tone pickups the longscale Dingwalls do an outstanding P vibe. My AB with TI flats or Payson flats gets retro P for days.

What I noticed most about switching from an AB-1 or longscale five or six string to a Super was the change in string spacing. 18mm on the AB vs 19 on all the Supers, both four and five string. I prefer the 19mm string spacing, and that is consistent across all FOUR string models, AB, Super or Dbird.

Now that I only have four strings, I really notice how short and compact the Super feels compared to the longscales. You get a punchier D&G on the Super with the 32” ish scale.

With any of the Dingwall basses and pickups, pickup height is critical to dial in what works for your attack and strings. It’s an important part of doing set up. A little bit makes a big difference.

I've got an ABZ5 with a P-tone in the neck. Good stuff.

My first 5-stringer was an Ibanez SR-505 (16.5mm if I recall). That almost ended my 5-string adventures.

I now alternate between my ABZ5 (18mm) for church and my D-Bird4 and SuperJ5 (both 19mm) for the cover / originals band. The differences are noticeable but manageable. I'm not a slapper, but when I do, I start looking for a 19mm.

Also in your earlier post you mentioned that an SJ now has a P-pickup option. Good to know!

The newer Ibanez BTBs look pretty nice.

I've never found that body shape comfortable though.

I own an Ibanez EHB, but with straight frets. I tried the fanned version and while I thought the fanned fret ("multi scale") model sounded a bit better, I preferred the playability of the straight frets. That was a little surprising coming from my Dingwalls.

I’ve been curious about the Ibanez ehb, but it seems they don’t do a MS four string in a scale I’d go for.

I figured the EHB’s would be all over the used market for reasonable prices in a year or two, boy was I wrong!

The metallic green, five string, multi short scale scale EHB temps if I string it E-C. I wouldn’t put more than $500 into that idea. It’s very short.

The Dingwalls have so much more going on than fanned frets. And they are designed with complete commitment to the idea, not just a neck slotted in a fan. As the idea catches on, more brands are offering multi scale, but not totally committing to integrating the design.

Then there’s everything else that makes a Dingwall. There’s not one detail that hasn’t been thought through.

I would check with Dingwall first to see if it would work, and if it would, I'd put it in the middle position. I think it's closer to the sweet spot for a P pickup. But, that's just me being me. :cool:

The Ibanez SR fanned basses are awful. Really the pinnacle of slapping fanned frets on a parallel fret design and not doing anything to optimize the ergonomics or design.
