My very first bass…. It’s gross. It shouldn’t be post in this thread…. Or any thread for that matter
I’ll just add this: when I did have five strings, they ended up E-C.
I think the best of both worlds is the Dbird or Droc. Four strings, the longscale, 19mm string spacing and tons of tones. Or a four string AB, Sklar, ect.

I have seen your vids. and the bass sounds great! The one I’m looking at is very similar.

Well, now you've gone and intrigued us. Perhaps there's an "embarrassing basses" thread where the bravest of us could venture a look...although that does have something of a seamy sideshow connotation. "I am not an animal! I am a bass guitar!"
Of course, this brings up the obvious question: I believe you've gotten rid of a bunch of great instruments, so why did you keep that one? I mean, a not-exactly-embarrassing-but-certainly-bottom-of-the-line Aria Pro II somehow disappeared from my collection in 1986, and I never looked back.
it’s not sellable!! Hahah. It’s literally a huge piece of crap. Currently half gutted. I do have the goal to make it make sound again. It hasn’t been playable in over a few decades. One of these days it’ll be a playable POS

To obtain the most vintage sounds from a Super J it has to be passive, that Glocken-shite does not work, I tried 2 Dingwalls with that horrible preamp and sold them both, whereas this Super J has balls, big ones too

when you bypass it the tone control is still poop to me. I hated every thing about the Glockenklang preamp. They use them in those German made Sandberg bassess too, ewww
The glock in my sandberg is pretty darn good and only 2bands with a passive tone control

Can't comment on Glock preamp -- I'd like to try that out sometime.
I like my passive SJ5 just the way it is!
My pickups are passive FDV which I thought were Neodymium. But now you've got me wondering. Firing an email off to Dingwall!
I think the Super J default is FDV, which is Alnico. Their FD3 is the only neo pickup I'm aware of.

Pickup Options -
Any of our FD size pickups can be fitted or retro-fitted into the current spec (non-Super-Fatty I) Super J models. The available options include the P-tone, which gets you as close to the traditional P sound as possible, the FD3, for a slightly more hi-fi tone and greater sensitivity to dynamics or the Super-Fatty II, for a huge, fat bottom-end with a little bit of sparkle on top. The Super J comes standard with 2 pickups in traditional spacing.

You know it says what pick ups they are in the top corner of the pick up right?
also, the pick up selection will make a difference in how that bass sounds.
I’ll wholeheartedly disagree with your opinion on the glockenklang. It may not work for the vintage tone you are after but it is a fantastic preamp! Sheldon wouldn't have put it in sooo many basses otherwise and continue to do so.l if it was poopie.
I’m pretty certain the SF2s are also Neo Magnets, The SF1s were. Alnico only came into the fold with the FDVs introduction is the way I understood it but with the revamp to larger shell SF2 maybe there was a magnet change too?

Yeah, the V in FDV refers to AlNiCo V magnet type.
I loved the Glockenlang preamp in my old ABZ6 even though I mostly played the bass passive. I find the tone control super usable in passive mode and would honestly consider putting a detented tone pot in all my passive basses if I could find affordable ones in the right value and taper.
