As in, what story are you expecting to hear? I was bored with the white look so I had a friend print me some cow spots to match the body shape, then painted the pick up covers in pink and tried those DR Pink strings that lasted very little before they started to peel and sound dead. The bass now has some fantastic Sadowsky Nickel strings and I'll stick with those. It's a passive JJ style bass with lights in the two volume pots just for show, they all came like that, the bass and the guitar have since been discontinued which is a shame because they are absolutely awesome and very light due to their construction see this link:

They must have changed that recently. I remember that the coating of DR strings was only used for the inner core and not the outer string wrapping.

I’m not sure what the old ones had, but it looks like there are 2 different coatings on these: a coating on the core and a “micro thin” coating on the wrap. I’m curious to try them out, as I didn’t really like Elixer when I’ve tried them before.

Good news, plenty of outer winding on the E string for the 36.25” scale length. With the DR pure blues, the E string outer wrap would just make it over the nut.

The rest of the set fits just fine.

I replaced a set of Payson nickel rounds that were .090-.035 so I expected to see more relief, and the truss rod needed about 1/2 a turn to bring it back to the whisper of relief I like.

Intonation was close enough, and I didn’t bother with saddle height adjustment. That was also close enough.

Normally, I’d fuss with both to get it exactly right, but….

I’m going to give it a few weeks to let the strings break in, and mellow out a bit, and see if I can live with the increased tension. At the moment, these things are painfully bright, but the set they replaced was very worn in. Most likely, it’s just new string zing.

Here’s the big but….I usually use nickel and nickel alloy strings. I like smooth feel, and I can’t stand stainless strings, they feel raspy and sticky. These are the first coated strings I’ve tried, and I’m not sure we are going to get along. The Dragonskins aren’t as raspy as stainless, but they sure aren’t as smooth as the nickel Pure Blues.

I’ll give them a good long trial, but, right off the bat, they seem almost scooped sounding. Lots of bottom, lots of top, but I’m missing the mid punch of the Pure Blues.

I will report back after I get some hours, sweat, and nose grease…some funk worked into the dragon skin. Maybe I need some dragon lotion?

I haven’t played these much since install last week, so I’m still trying to decide if they are keepers. More to come.

It started life in 1999 as a Z2 with Bartolini pickups.

I added the P-Tone at the neck in 2016.

I replaced the Bartolinis with Nordstrand Big Blades about a year ago.

I’m still tweaking it a bit for the SJ, but I’m happy to share it once I feel comfortable with the final result.
I need to play a few more shows in different environments to adjust the final touches
