I think these are a metallic, flaked black, not a standard gloss black finish… so matching the body correctly might not be as simple as you think?Laugh react because that's exactly what I thought when I saw this pic in a reverb listing.
My next thought was, "How hard would it be to duplicate the decals and paint the headstock?"

For the Dingwall crew it is likely a piece of cake, but since this is a production model, I'm guessing it is more about time/$. I'm with you guys, though. I stayed away from a lot of early ABZ and perhaps AB1 due to the neck heel or unmatched headstock, especially with a maple neck and wenge fretboard. My OCD kicks into overdrive, though I admit I made one exception on a Super PJ4 when I got a good deal on it and because of the top and it had mandolin frets. And this one is "sort of" matched with the "inlay" on the headstock.
Just picked up an NG3 here from the classifieds. Love the feel and that B string!
It came with the Darkglass Tone Capsule as the preamp, and I'm not sure it's for me. I mostly like passive, but the Bart preamp in my Lull is pretty great. I also mostly play 70s type rock, blues, and funk, so usually try to go for a more vintage feel, which the Dingwall is almost the exact opposite. I do like the passive sound of the pickups. I've been thinking about adding some things to it to customize it more to my tastes.
The pickup selector is a great idea, but I've been wondering if I should upgrade to the 6 position, specifically the one that has the middle pickup solo instead of the bridge. I never play the bridge solo, so it seems like it would give me another tonal option apart from the neck solo.
Or is it possible to take out the blend knob, and put in a 2 band EQ and make it Vol/Vol/Vol/Passive Tone/Treble+Bass Stack. On my Jazz, I like the flexibility of going neck full on with a hint of bridge, and that just isn't possible with the selector knob. Would a set up like this be possible or even recommended?
Also interested in the SFII's, they seem to lean a little more vintage.
And I know making a Dingwall sound vintage is a bit of an oxymoron, but it would be the perfect combo of playability and my preference of tone in a single instrument.

I bought an NG3 approximately 2 months ago. In the beginning, I was asking myself the exact same questions. Give yourself some more time with the bass. During the first weeks, I was changing my mind almost every time I was picking the bass up. The tone has grow on me. Now, tone wise it is almost as perfect as feel wise to me. IMHO, the more you’ll play it, the more you’ll know what you want to do with it.
I have to admit that I am still curious about the 3 volumes + tone. But, this bass has some amazing active tones too.
I feel that the only missing thing on the NG3 is a tone pot. I am pretty sure that the only mod i’ll do is, installing a stacked vol/tone pot instead of the single volume pot.

One thing I keep thinking that gets overlooked is when people talk about the 6 way switches and that you can customize it with your desired settings in most cases.
Mo makes them for Jason I assume and I deal directly with with Mo.
Something else to keep in mind is that with the DGTC is that very minute adjustments can go a long way to refine the sound. It’s very sensitive.

fwiw, I just swapped from SIT strings (also from Jason) to this new NYXL set, and I actually really like them.
My main band tunes down to drop G# and I don't want to mess with my Z3 by using heavy strings that'd prevent me from also playing my #1 in standard in different contexts, and these strings seem to have a bit more tension than the SIT strings, which is nice. The mids are definitely more present as well.
Liking them so far!

Well, I finally did it. You guys can stop listening to me go on and on about Candy Tangerine. 
I went through that rabbit hole a couple of years ago. Don't try to make a Dingwall not a Dingwall. Keep your Laklands and other FSOs for that vintage vibe. Embrace the Dingwall for what it is.
The problem is that we keep trying to make all basses sound like a P or a J. That's the sound we grew up listening to, and that we have to emulate in our playing.
Having said that, I'm not a fan of the Tone Capsule. When the Neve becomes available aftermarket I would replace it.
Small changes give big results on the Tone Capsule. The EQ points just aren't what I'm used to, and may not be at my preferred locations.
I think you're right, I need to sit with it for a bit to appreciate it's individual tone, then see exactly what needs to be swapped.
I think the 6 way knob is useful and non-destructive in the tone, that I may do that sooner than later. But I may swap to a different preamp in a few months.
