If I want to change the rotary pickup blend control of my SP1, to a normal pickup blend, do I just change to a different pot?

I’m not a fan of the rotary switch knob and on my PJ, I usually like to blend both but favouring the P pickup more.

Why a blend? Why not a second volume?

Depending on implementation. There are ways to use a blend without any sort of penalty.

Sheldon speaks about that "treble loss" in that video someone posted a few pages ago. They implemented a blend in the Nashville Combustion.

I may consider the v-v-t route too but yeah just checking the V-b-t possibility since I’m used to this setup.

Just wanted to know if anyone has done this from rotary pickup selector and changed to the traditional setting.

I'm halfway through watching the above video - I wish I'd been in attendance! The Nashville Combustion sounds and looks way cool. The blend versus rotary switch is a non-issue for me. I always select the middle pickup on my AB-I and the neck pickup on my SJ/P.

Yes I was surprised Sheldon put a blend pot on the Nashville edition. He has always maintained a blend control is detrimental to tone. But he talked to a lot of studio musicians in Nashville and most wanted it.

Any differences between South Korean and Chinese made Dingwalls? D-Roc in particular.

I have one of the Korean D-Rocs and it's amazing. It is more resonant and lively than my NG which is Chinese, but the NG sets up a little lower. Kind of apples to oranges.

For some reason, Sheldon wasn't entirely happy with it so they switched the production back to China.

My (uninformed) guess would be that the premium for Korean manufacturing vs Chinese wasn't enough of a value add with everything being gone over at the shop in Canada anyway. If anyone actually knows I'd love to hear about it.

String tension question!

Is it true or have you experience a feeling of stiffer strings with a stiffer neck?

I.e. Strings feeling stiffer with a wenge neck compare to roasted ash or Ovangkol?

Yup. Direct model comparisons with different neck woods. More noticeable on the long scale models. Ie Wenge feels tighter then maple

I'm really curious about the SP-1, but if the neck is too chunky I'm feeling hesitant.

The SP-1 5 neck is thinner (or at least feels thinner) than the Combustion 5 neck. I have both in my possession now. I will take measurements later today if I have time.

At the 1st fret, front to back:
SP1-5 : 26 mm
C5 : 25mm

At the 12th fret, front to back:
SP1-5 : 28mm
C5 : 26mm

I used a set of calipers to get the results

You are correct sir! I dont think there is a difference between NG and Combustion necks so I think my measurements apply to the NG as well

I am so annoyed. I ordered 3 sets of strings from Kalium that took an incredibly long time to come (and only after I emailed them asking about my order it was suddenly processed the next day). I went down to the local tech today to get another bass set up, so brought my AB1 for a restring while there. The G string was bad. Sounded dead as can be. We tried the other two (I had all 3 sets with me as they are packed all together). The other two G strings were also defective. Just emailed them. I wish I had an alternate string solution, but we tune to C Standard and I use the gauges from the chart that I believe Sheldon created (.118, .090, .070, .053). I just emailed them, so hoping they can get me replacements quicker than the 2+ months to get these in the first place and a bass with only 3 strings is not going to do me any good.

I gave up on Kalium unfortunately. I consider Skip a friend, but, I had to step away from their strings due to taking 6+ months to get orders. I hadn't had any defective strings in that time, but, having to try to read a crystal ball on when strings would be shipped in time for things was just not a situation that was workable for me. I remember at one point thinking "Hm, I have three spare sets, do I need to order now so that way I have a chance at getting new ones when I need them?" - that was when I was changing strings every 6-8 weeks due to the volume of playing I was doing. Now I mostly stick with Payson.
