I don't know if it's public yet, so, I'm going to vague post about it, but, Dingwall has a really flipping awesome new fretboard wood that they're starting to use on basses. I just had the option to change mine to that wood and am opting into it. It looks incredible, from the shop photos I got to see. It'll be their replacement for Macassar Ebony, which they're going to stop offering, due to high quality sources drying up.

Just saw that some dingwalls are made in South Korea. Any differences between South Korean and Chinese made Dingwalls? D-Roc in particular.

To date, as far as I know, there was just one Dingwall run coming from South Korea, and that was of D-Roc 5s, when they came out. For some reason, Sheldon wasn't entirely happy with it so they switched the production back to China. There might still be a few brand new of those Korean basses out there for purchase. You can identify them by their serial numbers. The Korean numbers start with a 2 digit model year, then comes the letter W, then a four-digit number. The Chinese serials are five-digit numbers only. The key difference is that the Korean D-Roc 5s had the Hipshot LIC tuners while the Chinese introduced the off-brand tuners.

My SP1 arrived a few days ago and I finally got a chance to set the action up and noodle around properly. A little neck heavy but I’ll get over it. If I get a chance to I will upload a better photo. Sounds amazing. And yes that is a C clamp on the piano so our toddler doesn’t mash peanut butter into the keys.

How sequential are serial numbers? I have #7081 for a custom Super PJ4 and I see #7723 on Sweetwater's website? The order went into production Feb 2 of this year. So that's only been 5 months. Just seeing a serial much higher than mine ready and available pushes the panic button. Ah!!! Did they skip me???? Heh.

Hi folks,
The serial numbers are, generally speaking, in sequential order. However, occasionally they aren't. Anything built for a tradeshow or needs to be rebuilt for one reason or another will skip the queue and therefor require a new serial number. In your case the #7723 was likely a rebuild of another bass that would have been much closer to yours. Nobody is getting skipped, just sometimes you end up cutting into something unexpected in the wood that doesn't meet our quality standards. I hope this helps.

I got my SP1 already, a 5-string.

It could be just my ears, but I feel like the A-string is particularly loud on mine. Has anyone else noticed this?…..

The A string on my SP1-5 was noticeably louder, too. But I changed strings to Dunlop Flats, lowered the action and adjusted all pickup heights—it’s even output now (BEAD=long scale 125-65, G=medium scale 45)…

Is it true or have you experience a feeling of stiffer strings with a stiffer neck?

I.e. Strings feeling stiffer with a wenge neck compare to roasted ash or Ovangkol?

I haven’t noticed that, but it would make sense. The neck must flex somewhat while playing, and a stiffer neck will flex less.

I’ve wondered this myself. I have build #7017 Custom ABI that went into production right about the exact same time as yours.

This is definitely true. I went from a Combustion 5 with an all maple neck to a Z3 with an all wenge neck. The Z3 definitely feels stiffer or 'flatter' if that makes sense (I like it but its a 'for better or worse' thing).
