Dingwall Owners Club

Finally got my custom SP1 PG’s from WD Music. It took about 3 1/2 weeks but they look killer!

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a Dingwall Z with both active preamp and passive tone?

My pickup selector pot became loose and when I went to turn it (to switch pickups) three wires broke their solder joints. Im trying to figure out where they go to resolder them. Two are black and one is white.

One black wire is leading to the output jack. Im assuming this one solders to one of those anchor points on the side of the pickup selector pot board. One black wire is coming from the push/pull volume pot (Im assuming this also goes to an anchor on the side of the pickup selector pot board. The last one is white, it is coming from the push/pull volume knob as well. No idea where this goes.

The Combustion diagram has all 4 going to the pickup selector pot, however, when I look at mine it appears that only 3 of the holes have solder on them which makes me think the white should go somewhere else...

Underside of the selector pot shows a solder joint on the opposite side. Could this be where the white goes?

Put a new electronics package in my Super J.

Signal path from front to back:
3X SF2 pickups
Series/Parallel switches
Dingwall D-Roc switch
StellarTone ToneStyler Bass 10
Nordstrand 2B+3A 2-band preamp

The big change was removal of the Glock preamp and replacement with the Nord and the ToneStyler. The Nord is a boost only circuit that Carey described as being similar to a classic Sadowsky preamp. To my ears it lands sonically between the classic Sadowsky thing and a Stingray’s preamp. The ToneStyler is a stepped passive tone control that has more favorable top end roll off compared to a typical passive tone control to my ears. The Nord is a wonderful sounding circuit that somehow sounds great and not at all bloated and overly bright with both controls fully boosted. The specs would make me think the opposite, but it sounds great. That setting on the preamp tempered by the ToneStyler on setting 7 or 8 along with the pickups in bridge-middle parallel, the bridge in parallel and the middle in series is just wonderful.

My custom order SJ5 has a Neve which is a similar 2-band boost-only design and a passive tone control. I suspect it will be very similar. I’ll likely throw a ToneStyler in that one when it arrives as well. Hopefully that one shows up sometime in the next decade 🤣

For your ToneStyler did you get the "Long" or "Short" one? How are you liking it?

The long and it just BARELY fits in the SJ cavity. I love it. That and the Nordstrand preamp really transformed the tone of that bass in a way I didn’t expect. Settings 7-8 on the Tonestyler are outrageously good with the Nord cranked on both bands.

How does a SP1 compare to a traditional Fender P-bass in terms of sound? I need a P in my kit and I am leaning towards a traditional Fender. I already own a Dingwall (John Taylor signature) and my god, they're such sweet basses. GAS is killing me.
I may be Bias but here's my thoughts:
I played USA Fender P Basses forever then switched to Spector Euros because I found the body shape and neck to be much more comfortable. I primarily used them with the P-Pickups soloed. After about a decade using Spectors I had been wanting to try a Dingwall. The SP1 was released so I picked one up and immediately fell in love with it. Long story short I now own (3) SP1's and they are my primary basses. My sound engineers and other bassists in the area have commented each time that I am out gigging that they are the best sounding basses they have heard. At least 2 other bassists in the area immediately went out and bought SP1's.

Does anyone know if Dingwall is willing to build replicas of NAMM builds? I’m obsessed with this specific D-Roc, and I found it’s from NAMM 2022, so idk if they’ll replicate it. Alternatively, does anyone know where it ended up? I’d be willing to buy it for the right price View attachment 7299307View attachment 7299308
Ish had it for sale until very recently:

I checked like 2 weeks ago and it was available. I considered buying it because I had two encounters with it, one at NAMM and then at the itinerary Boutique Guitar Showcase, here in Austin:

I know exactly where this bass ended up! It ended up in my music room! I am also obsessed with this D-Roc lol. I’ll be honest and tell ya that it’s extremely unlikely I decide to sell it at any point in the foreseeable future, but if I do, I can shoot you a message. Also, I’m like 95% sure I’ve sold you a bass in the past lol. Your profile picture is very memorable.
