I received my 4 string metallic black in June. My 5 string Ducati white is due any day now. I ordered a 5 string set of Payson Harmonic flats, medium scale (32"-35") for a custom build I was going to have done, but then ordered the white SP1, so they'll go on that bass when it arrives. I then bought a 4 string set that just arrived after a long journey from Texas to France. They're made specifically for the Dingwall medium scale basses, but will also work with medium scale Spector and Ibanez basses. There's another video from John Fox Basses that I can't track down at the moment that mentioned that he had to raise the saddles just slightly due to the taper on the Payson flats.

Hello fellow Dingwall players,

I just got a used Combustion 5. The Instrument is great, but I didnt knew that the preamp doesnt work with empty batteries.
My other basses have Glockenklang preamps and an empty battery is not an issue in passive mode.

Would you recommend switching preamps?

I was able to fit 35” scale Dogall Hellborg Rounds set (JH1716S 35) on my Dingwall NG3.

It’s a very special set of strings, stranded core, single wrap of pure nickel. Tension feels similar to TI JR but due to being single wrap B and E strings are VERY textured. Not rough though, just typical pure nickel rubbery feel that goes away.

Afaik it’s the only pure nickel round that kind of fits, not counting custom made sets ofc.

Taper on B just barely clears the nut, but it does clear it.
I put some very thin super glue right at the spot where string tapers, and trimmed the silk to clear the nut.

Rest of the strings fit as is, no cutting required but high stings obviously have some extra winds.

I also covered all string silks with a coat of elmers glue, it stops overly fragile silks from fraying and makes it a little bit rubbery - it doesn’t skip under tension. Those strings are known for very fragile and slippery silks. Elmers hack completely solves both problems.

Finally, a non-clanky pure nickel round-wound.
Sounds absolutely terrific and super easy to play and fret.

They sound really nice. I guess they probably last a good while?

If anyone wonders what the white SP1 looks like with a gold pickguard, wonder no longer. It is a darker, browner, less "metallic" gold than I thought it would be, but it looks ultra-classy IMHO! I'll let the person I traded with share their own pic, but preliminary indications are the blood-red-on-black look is spooky and metal AF. :cool:

As you'd expect from Dingwall, it was a snap to remove and install (didn't take strings off or anything) and the screw holes matched up perfectly.

That's very interesting! I have a set of those lying around and was wondering whether they would fit my NG3. Good to know they do -- I will give them a go once I've chewed up my two current Dingwall-branded sets. I'm not too keen on the sound of the DHs for most of my band work actually (too lyrical? refined? sophisticated?), but I love their uncanny ability to intonate in the uppermost ranges of the instrument where most strings fail. However, the multiscale design seems to make this characteristic of the DHs somewhat obsolete. (I found out I'm more of a steel kind of guy too, so that's what my basses with rounds are sporting these days...)

I am looking at purchasing an early Dingwall Super J.
I am new to this brand and wondering if these are totally made in Canada and if they had any issues I should be aware of. This bass has a serial number around 3750. Not sure of date of manufacture .
Any input would be appreciated.

You can send the serial to Dingwall to get specifics. However, up until very recently all Supers weer Canadian, so you can at least know that it's a Canadian build.
The pickups should have a label on the bottom for what they are if you want to pull them. Similar, you should be able to determine the controls, up to and including any preamps, by opening the control cavity.
Where's the photos? :D

The toggle switch is for active/passive mode, did you try that?
