Dingwall Owners Club

Put a new electronics package in my Super J.

Signal path from front to back:
3X SF2 pickups
Series/Parallel switches
Dingwall D-Roc switch
StellarTone ToneStyler Bass 10
Nordstrand 2B+3A 2-band preamp

The big change was removal of the Glock preamp and replacement with the Nord and the ToneStyler. The Nord is a boost only circuit that Carey described as being similar to a classic Sadowsky preamp. To my ears it lands sonically between the classic Sadowsky thing and a Stingray’s preamp. The ToneStyler is a stepped passive tone control that has more favorable top end roll off compared to a typical passive tone control to my ears. The Nord is a wonderful sounding circuit that somehow sounds great and not at all bloated and overly bright with both controls fully boosted. The specs would make me think the opposite, but it sounds great. That setting on the preamp tempered by the ToneStyler on setting 7 or 8 along with the pickups in bridge-middle parallel, the bridge in parallel and the middle in series is just wonderful.

My custom order SJ5 has a Neve which is a similar 2-band boost-only design and a passive tone control. I suspect it will be very similar. I’ll likely throw a ToneStyler in that one when it arrives as well. Hopefully that one shows up sometime in the next decade 🤣
Been using ToneStylers for many years and they’ve not only made my basses sound better, but it’s great to recall an exact sound / tone instantly. Our soundman loves them.

Ordered an SP1 yesterday. Should be here next week. :hyper:
The joy! Now the wait. The Ducati White SP1-5 that I paid for a couple of months back just showed up this morning!!! My Metallic Black SP1-4's bigger brother finally showed up. Not "late July" like originally quoted, but close enough, and it arrived in perfect condition. Props to Bass Freaks in Brussels.

You know the rules – no pictures, no bass! :D

I ordered a SP1-5 VB a while ago here in Germany at the biggest music shop here (and I also think worldwide), but I just got a response that it will arrive in December (or maybe even later) :(

I’m not sure what they did wrong when ordering, but on the other hand I really enjoy all the NBD’s of you guys :)

I saw a couple other SP1-5s in stock here in Germany just yesterday when I was looking. Don’t think the VB one though. Station Music has both a green and white one, for instance, showing in stock.

I know. I know.

I need to photograph all of my 20 or so basses for insurance purposes. I will take a couple of just my SP1's.

I had the chance to Play an SP1 5 in green at Leroux music not long ago.

What a bass. Dingwall hit another home run with these for sure!!!

As I aim to downsize I don’t see one in my future but you never know…. It’s definitely a partial trades contender(even though I’m in no trades mode). lol.

Amazing bass. Brian at Leroux was super awesome as well. He’s definitely trying to offset where L and M is lacking.

I know exactly where this bass ended up! It ended up in my music room! I am also obsessed with this D-Roc lol. I’ll be honest and tell ya that it’s extremely unlikely I decide to sell it at any point in the foreseeable future, but if I do, I can shoot you a message. Also, I’m like 95% sure I’ve sold you a bass in the past lol. Your profile picture is very memorable.

Does anyone have light gauge string ideas for a Combustion 6? Bonus points for a set that approximates progressive tension. I'm needing to tune up to C standard. A .130 is perfect but I don't like the high tension of E through C strings.
